A police officer was fatally shot in an "unprovoked attack" near a police station in a Maryland suburb of the nation's capital, authorities said Sunday. A second person, not a police officer, also was shot and wounded, police said. Two suspects in the officer's shooting were in custody. Police identified the slain officer as 28-year-old Jacai Colson, a four-year veteran of the Prince George's County Police Department who was days shy of his birthday.

The police department said on Twitter that Colson "lost his life in defense of this community today. This was an unprovoked attack." Authorities didn't immediately elaborate on the tweet Police had originally advised residents near the police station in Landover to stay inside, and others to avoid the area, because of an "active then lifted the "shelter in place'advice in a message on Twitter soon after the second suspect was apprehended. I BETTENDORF BY ANTHONY WATT awattqconline.com The 20-year effort to build a new Interstate 74 bridge across the Mississippi River between Moline and Betten-dorf is moving into the home stretch, with this season's work expected to clear the way for construction of the actual bridge to begin in 2017.

The new bridge will run just east of the existing one. It will have two spans, each with four lanes and full shoulders. There also will be a recreation trail and an overlook in the middle. It is expected to open in 2020, with the existing bridge to be demolished in 2021. Doug Rick, 1-74 project manager for the Iowa Department of Transportation, said two related projects underway in Bettendorf are expected to be completed in 2016.

They are the switching of US. Highway 67 from State Street to the north and the rebuilding of a portion of Kimberly Road. "That's the plan to be done by the end of this year," he said. Study: New rules needed for pilot health issues LE BOURGET, France Aviation agencies around the world should draw up new rules requiring medical workers to warn authorities when a pilot's mental health could threaten public safety, French investigators recommended Sunday after a yearlong probe Into the Germanwings plane crash.
