Mels defeated tho Baltimore Orioles four games to one for the bunting, Wrophofo) That's What Fearless Said Huss To Shoot Down Eagles Next to Royston, I'm the best high school quarterback around on running the option play, almost as good as Tommy Bradley of Hunter Huss at scrambling, and nearly as good as Stanley's Buddy Green at passing. Heck, I even play without a mask on my helmet I'm so fearful, er, fearless and fanciful (notice (ho picture Life Magazine took of me recently). Off the field, folks are always saying smart alec things to me. For instance, I was waiting on a bus the other day and asked a guy: "Say, mister, how long will the next bus be?" And he replied: "I understand it's going lo be 32 feet and eight inches long." But I came back with one recently.

A young lady asked me if I was "unattached." I replied: "No, I always dress sloppy like this." Have you ever noticed that a sports writer never wears the same color coat and panls? I guess it's cause ha can't afford a suit! Well, you want to know who will emerge triumphant in tonight's prep football al- Iractions. We'll start with Eai( at Huss. The Cougars were moved to North Carolina after a Tar Hcc! group headed by Jim Gardner, former Republican congressman, purchased the ailing Houston Mavericks last January. The loam finished the season in Texas before constantly dwindling crowds.

The Cougars will divide their 42-game home schedule among three North Carolina cities. They play 20 games at Greensboro, 14 at the Charlotte Coliseum and eight at Dorton Arena in Raleigh. The Charlotte "home" opener will be next Wednesday against Washington, formerly the Oakland team. The Raleigh opener will ba Nov. 5 against Kentucky.

Built around former area college stars, the Cougars bear little resemblance to the- lumping Mavericks. Only three former remain on the roster. The top returnee is guard Bob Verga, former Duke star. He's one of five Carolinas players on the 11-man rosier commanded by Bones McKinney, former pro player and Wake Forest University coach. Others are Doug Moo and Bill Bunting, University of Norlh Carolina stars; rookie Gene Littles from High Point Coliege; and Randy Mahaffcy from Clemson.

Rounding out the lineup are Hank Whitney from Iowa State; Ron Perry from Virginia Tech; Cal Fowler from St. Francis; Steve Kramer from Brigham Young; George Pceples from Iowa, and George Sutor from LaSailc. Mce and Whitney are expcct- to start at forward, Verga and Littles at guard and either Bunting or Pceples at center. The team won its last four exhibition games this mor.lh for a final 0-4 record. McKinney says, "We think we've made a great deal of progress in molding a team.

Our execution isn't always what we want, but effort- wise, the players are doing tho Job. "The other teams in the ABA have had tlirce years to put together a club. We've had five vveeks. But we're ready to play." up Huskies. like the Atcls, they're simply amazin'.

They weren't supposed lo take anything but to the playing field this year and here they are with a good chance of winning Ihc District 8 tille, I'm hoping they go, as llicy say, all Ihc way. And they'll lake another big stride here tonight with a 20-14 victory over East Mecklenburg. Incidentally, 1 forsee a South victory over Hickory at South, thereby giving the Huskies undisputed possession of the top spot. Go. Huskies! I GAZED into my crystal ball and saw Hie Holbrook Lions winning fhcir seventh straight without a loss tonight in Bessemer Cily.

The Yellow Jackets, ycl lo win, will play well, but the Lions will caplure a 26-6 victory. Slanlcy will win its second straight over Dallas in a r.on- league encounter at Stanley as quarterback Ruddy Green leads the way, 20-13. Mt. Holly and Charlotte Catholic have had some fine football duels and tonight's contest at Coslner should be no different. But Catholic is yet lo lose and the prediction here is that the Cougars will slay Uiat way tonight, 14-7.

South Point will bounce back with a 21-13 victory at R-S Central. Slielby will get by Kings Mountain 20-6, cherryville will squeeze pas'. Crest (incidentally. Crest upset Colgate recently) 14-13, Chase will bump Lincolnton 28-7. Blacksburg will defeat Clover 27-7 and Lexington, S.C., will eke past York 20-13.
