Bob Wirz, a former Journal sports scribe and onetime Hastings sportscaster, reports from St. Louis that the St. Louis Cardinal pro football coaching staff is already singing Fischer's praises. Wirz, stationed with Uncle Sam at Ft. Leonard Wood, reports that the coaches "have been quite impressed with the work of ex-Nebraska stars, tackle McDole and Fischer." A St. Louis newspaper covering the Cardinals' camp reports: "Fischer is the smallest player in camp at 5-10, 165 pounds, but he is very quick and agile and has impressed with his darting movements. He's shown exceptional pass- catching ability and has been used in both offensive and defensive units. "McDole, a 6-3, 255-pounder, is quite fast for a big man and has been placed with the defensive unit." Been Around Awhile A recent sports item report from the Nebraska State Penitentiary brought a sportswriter's request as to when a Pen Redbird pitcher entered the game.

H. HUDSON fa Boston UR "I was so far out I couldn't hear a thing." John Blanchard, one of the most prideful of the proud Yankees, spoke excitedly Friday night after his 9th inning, pinch-hit grand slam home run pulled out an 11-8 victory over Boston and returned New York to first place in the American League race. "It was the biggest thrill of my life," said the reserve catcher whose two out blow to right center field off Red Sox relief ace Mike Fomieles capped a rally from an 8-6 deficit. "All the guys were waiting for me with congratulations when I got back to the dugout but I was momentarily deaf," Blanchard added. The blow was a record, too, the 6th pinch-hit grand slammer of the season in the AL-5 in 1953.

"This homer was bigger than most to me," Blanchard said. ''The bases were full and we had just lost a terrible doubleheader to Washington. "Fomieles threw me 3 curves in a row, then a fast one. All I was looking for was i a ball to hit and I got it." Manager Ralph Ilouk, a reserve catcher himself in his playing days, commented: "Blanchard is a terrific hitter in the clutch. He has the right attitude.

He goes up there looking for a strike. He's not trying to out think the pitcher." Blanchard, who had twice hit pinch homers earlier this season, saved Mickey Mantle's 37th homer. Roger Maris' 36th and Yogi Berra's 12th from being wasted in a lost cause. lie also prevented southpaw Whitey Ford, not involved in the decision, from losing an 11-game wipningj streak. Houk pointed to Blanchard's clutch performance and the 3 runs batted in by Berra as Jan example that the Yankees are not a two man team de- spite the deadhlines monopolized by the Mantle-Maris battle.

"The buzzing is all Mantle and Maris," said Houk. "I guess it's always been like that in baseball. Ruth and Gehrig and Dlmaggio overshadowed a lot of other good Yankee players." i KITCHEN I BATH GREEN FURNACE PLUMBING INC. 2747 No. 4lHi IN Randolph I Wickham and r.rccri.
