Sanford, Recalls Karly Days in Milam County; In Native D. H. Sanford of Rockdale, one of the old native citizens of Milam County, was a visitor to Cameron last week. He is unusually well preserved for his age and was in a reminiscent mood while discussing old times in Milam County. Just after the Civil War and, while a small boy, the family were residents of Bryant Station, now one of the of Texas, marked by a suitable stone.

His uncle, the late General H. P. and grand father of Mrs. J. Adams of Cameron, was a merchant in Bryant Station at that time and the late E.

M. Scarborough was clerking for him. In later years Mr. Scarborough was founder of the firm of Scarborough and Hicks of Rockdale and E. M.

Scarborough and Sens of Austin. Mr. Sanford remembers vividly a story that oecured at Bryant Station in 18G7 or 1898. Some buildings were demolished and a great los. was had in the store.

He recalls that pocket knives were blown seven miles from the store building, and hat in the house in which the family resided, a slow rain was falling and his father thought the roof was leaking, when an investigation show td that it was entirely blown off. Bryant Station was an Indian Agency of the Republic of Toas and Majoi njamin Bryant was the Agent, ippointed by President Sam Houston. The remains of Major Bryant and his wife have been removed to the State Cemetery at Austin at which ceremonies were held in the State Captial, Governor Pat Neff being the orator of the occasion. There was formerly a Masonic Lodge in Bryant Station nnd a Company of Confederate soldiers were organized there but now1 there is not building to tell the story. is another true story connected with the old town, as related by the late E.

M. Scarborough to a friend. It seems that there had been trouble and, as it was in reconstruction days, the Captain of the Fnion soldiers, located in Camwron. made a visit there to investigate. He wore a Masonic button and Mr.

Scarborough and the late F. M. Blank being Masons, took him aside and told him that he had better return to Cameron at once as bis life was in danger. Later his saddle was found in Elm Creqk bottom and bis death was vei counted for. M.

E. Collier accompanied by hib grandson, Gene Roach and Mrs. Wallace Roach spent Thursday night in the home of Mrs. Guy T. Newton.
