rwy 1 BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE October 9, 1977 79 Huskies gain 400 yards NU plucks SCoiin, 38-14 N.E. SMALL COLLEGE ROUNDUP Springfield stuns Ithaca Mike Lasorsa of Fitehburg, scored on a 17-yard run, gained 142 yards on 20 carries and became Springfield College's all-time career rushing holder while pacing the Chiefs to a stunning 28-15 victory over nationally-ranked Ithaca College at Springfield. Ithaca entered the game with a 3-0 record and was ranked third in the nation among Division III colleges. Lasorsa now has rushed for 2219 yards. The previous record of 2154 was set by Dave Buddington.

Springfield took the lead for good (14-7) when quarterback Bob Weller scored on a broken play from 17 yards out late in the second quarter. Chiefs' fullback Fred Deutch scored in the third and fourth quarters for a 28-7 cushion and Ithaca's Bob Edson concluded the scoring on a pass from Steve Manning with 10 minutes remaining. Norwich registered its fourth win in five starts as it stopped Boston State, 24-0, at Daly Field, Brighton. Norwich displayed fine ball control, running the ball 64 times for 249 yards with touchdowns being recorded by Paul Bicker (on a pass from Mike Palmer), Milt Williams and Mike Crimmons. Dick Luscin-ski, who kicked three points after, booted a 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Williams was the ramrod of the Norwich attack, carrying 17 times for 152 yards. Bates fullback Gary Pugath of Needham scored four times on one-yard plunges three in the second half as he sparked the Bobcats to their first win, a 43-26 decision over Hamilton at Lewiston. Bates led, 21-20, at halftime and dominated the second half. Bowdoin also won its first game as it downed Worcester Tech, 34-16, at Brunswick as Peter Cooper and Jay Pensavalle sparked the Polar Bears. Bowdoin jumped off to a 21-0 lead at the half after Pensavalle scored from the four on a quarterback keeper and then passed to Bruce Bernier.

Those scores were followed by a three-yard scoring burst by Tom Sciolla. Cooper was the big gun in the second half as he scored twice on runs of three and 10 yards. Wesleyan, with Dennis Robinson leading the way (86 yards rushing), measured Coast Guard, 24-7, at Middletown for its third win. The Cardinals leaped off to a 17-0 halftime lead when Bob Lattessa rammed in from the one, Robinson clicked from 22 yards out and Mike Pappa kicked a 35-yard field goal. American International, a Division II team, had to rally behind reserve quarterback Ray Borup in the second half to gain a 14-14 tie with Division III Amherst at Springfield.

Amherst dominated the first half, during which quarterback Mike Newman completed 18 of 23 passes for 223 yards. The Lord Jeffs, however, managed only two touchdowns and were held three times inside the AIC 10-yard line. Borup took over in the third quarter and sparked a 60-yard drive which was capped by an eight-yard pass to John Gibbons. Borup started another drive in iff 2) lull A By Dennis Naughton Special to The Globe NEW HAVEN There were some oddities and changes right from the beginning of Northeastern's encounter with Southern Connecticut State College yesterday. First, guard Wayne Bourgeois was switched to halfback.

Then there was the absence of halfback Preston Carroll (thigh injury) and quarterback Bill Pinto, a reserve who performed admirably in last week's loss to AIC, scoring two touchdowns. Pinto was shaken up in that game. So in a somewhat quirky situation, the Huskies, traveled to Bowen Field. It was all academic by halftime, however. NU scored the first time it got the ball after a fumble recovery by defensive end Kip Sternberg at the Southern Conn, six-yard line with 2:56 gone in the game.

They followed with a 21 -point second quarter outburst in a 38-14 romp over the Owls, now 0-5. It was Northeastern's first road win since 1974. In that second quarter, tight end Dan Ross (seven receptions, 103 yards) caught two touchdown passes, one from freshman Al Deary and the other from Clark Crowley, which helped NU break a three-game 'winless streak. The Huskies improved their slate to 2-2-1. Northeastern did just about everything right, totaling more than 400 yards on offense and getting a spark from fleet freshman halfback Blake Russell.

Of course, Bourgeois, a fullback and end in high school at Thayer Academy, was also "He's like a spring," said coach "Bo" Lyons of Russell, who hails from East Orange, N.J. Russell gained 61 yards on 20 carries and one score. "He has the quickness we need and Wayne provides the big back that I've been looking for. Blake is finally coming along. He's learned the offense and adjusted well," Lyons said.

Russell, who also had four catches for 30 yards, converted the first-quarter score on a three-yard run. Freshman Kyle Tufts, who later added a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter, kicked his first of five PATs for a 7-0 lead. The Owls came right back in a superbly engineered 12-play, 80 yard-drive. Junior Tom Flaherty, after connecting on three passes to junior flanker Gary Hurley during key points in the march, scored at 6:35 on a one-yard keeper up the middle. Jim Sata-gaj tied the game with the boot.

But SCSC's downfall was allowing NU to get hold of the ball in the second quarter. Ross' first score came at the end of a seven-play, 39-yard drive which included two consecutive 15-yard penalties. This supplied Crowley with a first and 35 yards-to-go situation. He responded by flinging two screens to Russell of 12 and 13 yards and a 15-yarder to end Chris Bradley, which brought the ball to the 10. After a five-yard loss by Russell, Deary entered the game.

On his first pass, he hit Ross for the score at 11:17. The second Ross TD was another 15-yarder with 3:25 left in the half. It capped a 13-play, 80-yard trek after SCSC missed a field goal. Linebacker Jim Walsh completed the half's scoring with a 32-yard interception return at the 13:01 point. Tufts field goal at 9:03 in the third quarter made it 31-7.

Both teams traded touchdowns in the final quarter, Curt O'Donnell on a 73-yard broken play run with 3:15 left to counter a Flaherty-to-Tony Santilli get-together 26 seconds earlier. (Globe photo by Frank O'Brien) saw it to official John Codey after a foul call. Boston State coach Mac the fourth quarter, which plunge by Tony Bostick. Maritime tips Curry, 10-7 touchdown was set up by Phil McCarthy's rumble recovery, which was followed by a 30-yard scoring pass from Frank Sears to Steve Fogg in the third quarter. Mike Drouin scored an insurance touchdown from the one early in the fourth. Drouin, a freshman fullback, led Colby's rushing attack with 156 yards. Quarterback Bill Whelan threw for 249 yards and three touchdowns to lead Williams to a 28-0 romp-over Trinity at Hartford. Montclair State's Randy Schenauer and Orlando Alverez teamed up Saturday for a couple of touchdown plays to secure a 14-6 win over Central Connecticut State College here in Montclair, N.J.

Maritime to its fourth straight victory, a come-from-behind 10-7 win over Curry at Buzzards Bay. Curry took the early lead on a one-yard keeper by quarterback Steve Leach at the six-minute mark of the second quarter. The play capped an 80-yard drive that featured a 34-yard run by Dave Christopher.

Mass. Maritime tied the game at 5:22 of the third quarter when Curry gambled and lost, giving up the ball on its 16-yard line. Leach was sacked by Maritime on that play, one of eight times the Curry quarterback was dropped for a loss three by Don Keefe. With time running out, Mass. Maritime drove from its 45 and had the ball on the Curry 11 when the hosts were detected holding and the ball was put back to the 26.

However, Henry was still able to kick the winning field goal. MAINE MARITIME, 12-6 Bob Murphy scored all 12 points for Maine Mari-' time-r. one touchdown by recovering a teammate's fumble in the end zone, another on a pass reception as it defeated Plymouth State, 12-6, at Castine. Relph completed two passes for 60 yards in 24 seconds and Jerry Andrewlavage kicked a 38-yard field goal at the half to snap a 14-14 tie. The Raiders then got two long runs from Relph and Henry White for two more touchdowns during three minutes which overlapped the third and final periods to coast to a 31-14 triumph their fifth in a row. Colgate, the unchallenged leader for the Lambert Trophy, had a wide advantage in the statistics thanks to the heavy duty running of White and Pat Healy and the passing of Relph. And its defense dominated, once past the scary first half.

Then Neil Wheelwright, who had coached Colgate for 14 seasons before moving to HC early last year, harried his old charges with a surprising switch in offense. He junked the wishbone attack he had taught for seven seasons and came up with his version of a power I. This new wrinkle, combined with the passing of Pete Colombo and the hard-running of sophomore Crocky Nangle, enabled the Crusaders to overcome a 14-0 first-quarter deficit and get even with two second-period touchdowns. A crowd of 10,132 at Fitton Field watched a generally sloppy game, however, as the Crusaders and Colgate each turned the ball over six times. Holy Cross fell behind on the opening kickoff drive and was down by 14 in the quarter as the Raiders converted off John Quinn's interception, the first of five Raider thefts.

But Holy Cross, shifting out of the Wishbone into the I formation just about every play, drove 69 yards, finishing on a three yard pass from Columbo to sophomore tight end Chuck Mullen of Hanover. "Their new offense surprised us, we weren't ready for it and it and it took some time to adjust," said Colgate coach Fred Dunlap. "Also, Holy Cross is playing much better this year than last, even though they still haven't gleaned that first victory. We have a lot of respect for HC." Wheelwright, disappointed that the young Crusaders couldn't sustain their play of the second period, made it clear the switch away from the wishbone was no one-game experiment. "We're an I team from now on," said Weelwright, since the wishbone hadn't produced the outside running or passing strength he had expected.

Most of the spectators felt Colgate's field goal in the closing seconds of the half shocked the Crusaders at a time when they seemed to have the momentum. But Wheelwright felt two long runs a 26-yard rollout by Relph and a 75-yard up-the-middle scamper by White on a draw were the crushers. He had high praise for the Colgate defense, which permitted HC to cross midfield only once in the second half. SWIM The name of the snowplow: WESTERN.
