Brian Buckley, the third choice of coach Joe Res-tic, took over a sluggish offense 18 seconds into the third quarter against Colgate and started cranking up. Playing the entire second half out of the shotgun, Buckley, a sophomore seeing his first varsity experience, threw an incredible 40 passes, completing 20 for 250 yards and two touchdowns. Buckley's performance, however, did not match the efficiency of Colgate quarterback Bob Relph, who threw for three touchdowns in 11 completions and ran for another score as the undefeated Red Raiders handed Harvard its fifth straight home-field loss, 38-21. "We found out some important things today," said Restic, who lost starting quarterback Tim Davenport for the season in the opener two weeks ago against Columbia.

"Brian moved the ball up and down the field, and he did it under duress, under pressure. These are things you have to find out, and they're things you can't find out in practice. They're things you have to find out during play on the field when it counts." Harvard opened the game with Larry Brown at quarterback and jumped off to a 7-0 lead when he passed 18 yards to fullback Scott Coolidge. The touchdown was set up when defensive end Bob Baggott recovered a fumble forced by linebacker Craig Beling. Relph, who threw for 177 yards before retiring late in the third quarter, evened the count five minutes later with a 51-yard pass to Bruce Malverty.

Jerry Andrewlavage booted two field goals early in the second quarter, one from 48 yards, giving Colgate a 13-7 edge. Then, four plays after a 12-yard punt by Jim Curry gave the Red Raiders the ball on the Harvard 27, Relph rolled right and stepped in untouched. A two-point conversion by fullback Pat Healy gave Colgate a 21-7 lead which stood up at halftime as Harvard failed to score in the final seconds after having a first down on the Red Raider three. Colgate stopped No. 2 quarterback Burke St.

John for a two-yard loss, sacked him at the 19, then dropped Curry for another loss on a pass completion as time ran out. "We score there, it's a different ball game," said Restic. "But since we don't, we have to gain time, and the only way to do that is to throw the ball." Enter Buckley, who, according to Restic, "is the best gun we've got." His first varsity play was not memorable. He was intercepted. "I told him, 'Forget said Restic.

"That's exactly what I told him. I told him one play's not going to decide this ball game, to just go back in and throw it and that's what he did." "I was upset," said Buckley, who threw 25 touchdown passes in 1975 at Exeter Academy, "but I figured it was just one of those things. You have to feel you can do the' job. I knew I was ready. I threw a hundred passes a day all summer to get ready for something like this." Harvard, which gained only 28 yards rushing in 25 attempts in the first half, threw its ground game out the window in the final two quarters, running the ball only six times.

But it wasn't until the fourth quarter, with Colgate leading comfortably, 38-7, that Buckley's passes produced any points. First, he completed an 11-yard scoring pass to Curry, whose 13 receptions tied a school record set by Pat Mclnally, now a member of the Cincinnati Bengals. Then, with 41 seconds to play, he hooked up with Gary Confer from 22 yards out. It was too little too late, but it did provide Harvard with a silver lining on an otherwise gloomy Saturday. "They put the points on the scoreboard, which is the only way you can really judge the game," said Restic.

"But we found out some things today. We're going to work on our running game to go with the shotgun. We're going to establish that balance. People are going to have to get ready for us. And I'll tell you, it's not going to be easy." 15-to-18, and 50-and-over age brackets.
