Clement B. Auger; Maine official, 46 United Press International BIDDEFORD, Maine Funeral services will be held Saturday for Clement B. Auger, 46, a controversial York County commissioner who challenged the Maine Legislature of the funding of county agencies. Auger, a native and lifelong resident of Biddeford, died Wednesday after a long illness. He had served as a commissioner since 1972.

Auger stirred up a major controversy when, as chairman of the board in 1975, he recommended against the county funding non-governmental agencies. The Legislature passed its own version of the county budget, including funds for six such agencies, but Auger and another commissioner refused to disperse the funds until ordered to do so several months ago. He also created controversy when he said a new county jail should not be built until it was totally funded. The York County Jail has been a center of controversy since it was condemned last year. The issue has remained under study.

Three Air Force SR71 planes will attempt four speed records Tuesday during training missions from Beale Air Force Base in California.

The sleek "black bird" jet reconnaissance aircraft, based at the Strategic Air Command's 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Beale, will try to better the world absolute speed record for a closed circuit course and the world class record for speed over a 1000-kilometer (621.4 mile) closed-circuit course with 1000-kilogram (2200 pounds) payload. The course records set in October 1967 by the Soviet Union's MIG25 Foxbat aircraft are 1853 mph for the world absolute speed and 1815 mph for the world-class record. World absolute records take in all classes of aircraft and world class records consider only the class of the aircraft. The SR71 is a Class C1 Group 3 jet-engine aircraft. The third and fourth speed records the Beale aircrews will try to break are for the world absolute and the world class speed over a 15-25 kilometer straight course.

Associated Press CHOWCHILLA, Calif.Authorities searched late yesterday for 27 children and a driver whose school bus was found abandoned in a dry canal and hidden by heavy foliage, said Madera County Sheriff Ed Bates. Bates said the bus, on a regular run carrying grade school pupils home from a swimming outing at a Chowchilla fairgrounds pool, was reported two hours overdue by parents at 4:15 p.m. After a ground search proved fruitless, an air search was begun. A deputy spotted the bus from the aid. When investigators arrived at the scene, they found the bus had been driven into the canal and apparently hidden intentionally on the edge of the canal.

It was 40 miles northwest of Fresno, on the flat," west side of San Joaquin Valley farmland in central California. Bates said the bus was empty, with no evidence, of violence. He said investigators found light tracks of a vehicle going out of the canal. The key to the bus had been taken," Bates said.
