Landry said quarterback Danny White, who has nine touchdown passes and 12 interceptions, was still hurting because of a rib cartilage separation. "Danny will be playing pain all year," Landry said. "His ribs can't heal when be keeps getting pounded.

However, he is throwing pretty well, bomelimes he hurls more than others and doesn't have zip on the ball but I'd give him a positive grade overall." We started getting after The Cowboys' get-tough policy has propelled them to the top of the National Conference Eastern Division with a 6-2 record. Landry said the hard part is ahead for the Cowboys. "We'll have to play the best game we can to beat the teams we have on our schedule," Landry said. The Cowboys have a three-game stretch in which they play St.

Louis on Monday night, travel to Washington the following Sunday and then play host to the Chicago Bears. "If we win two of the three we would be having great success because all those games are subject to losses if we don't play at a top level," Landry said. You'll see it when one team plays well and another doesn't." Faust hopes it doesn't happen to the Irish again this week when they take on Navy. "They have a 3-and-4 record but easily could have come here with one loss," Faust said. "They lost their first three games by a total of eight points. They had a chance to go for a tie against Indiana but went for two points and lost. Against North Carolina they went for two and a tie and made it, but the play was called back, and they missed their next chance." Faust said that.if Notre Dame had played Michigan in the fifth game of the season and lost, "It would have been different.

We played well in the next game (in beating) Michigan State. "But we stunk against Purdue." Since then, and despite a loss to undefeated Air Force, Faust said the Irish have played well: "Now that we know Michigan is a great team and we have our confidence back. "Those things happen," Faust said of the unexpected losses. "How do you explain Texas-El Paso beating Brigham You'll see a lot more of it. I hope it doesn't CHICAGO (AP) Coach Gerry Faust called Notre Dame's season-opening loss to Michigan "devastating" but said the team has righted itself by regaining its confi-! dence.

Now that Notre Dame has played well in its past three games that included victories over Army and Southern California, Faust tried to explain the 1-3 start. "We didn't know the strength of the other teams," Faust said. "Nobody knew how strong Michigan was, and we played well against them. But the loss was devastating, and we lost our confidence." ar" 1 1 iMfMi mv iihi i hi Sellout at Dallas sees Lakers win 53 bulletin board PRICES Jabbar comes to the rescue Mdrnwa THRU Sunday: NOV. 3 AUTO STORES 33 The Associated Press After spending most of the second quarter in foul trouble, center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored 10 of his 20 points in the third quarter as the Los Angeles Lakers passed the host Dallas Mavericks en route to a 133-115 victory Tuesday night in National Bas-BBHBnBaaBHketaball Association play.

The last time UTEP beat a pair of WAC foes back-to-back was in 1974 when it knocked off Arizona State and Wyoming on successive weekends. Harvey would like to change all that. "I feel this was my best one, the best win I've ever played in," he said of the upset of BYU.

"We really needed a victory and they (the Cougars) couldn't stop our offense. "We want to go out there this Saturday against New Mexico and really win big, try to prove to everybody that this was no fluke." With 100-yard rushing efforts against a pair of (at the time) Top 10 teams, one thing seems certain. Harvey is no fluke. game. He played only about two quarters against Air Force and he played barely a quarter against New Mexico State.

Harvey has that 232-yard performance against Colorado State, a 138-yard outing against SMU. And the 102 against BYU. Everyone is smiling this week in Minerland; all of a sudden, everyone is looking forward to homecoming Saturday night against New Mexico. Of course, the reason for all the smiling is UTEP's shocking upset over seventh-ranked (and defending national champion) Brigham Young. And no one is smiling any more than freshman tailback John The 6-foot-l. 180-pounder from Spring Valley, N.Y., certainly played a key role in the UTEP shocker. But almost important, almost as big a reason for smiling around the UTEP football camp is the fact Harvey played at all.
