Tut t-D THQjAjQTTjlR 28, IMP Detailed Sun stats 'Huskers lacked bowl enthusiasm bench remained calm throughout a long Mississippi State drive for a field goal, it remained calm when the Bulldogs stuffed the Big Red offensive unit, it remained calm even after they converted yet another fumble into a touchdown to move out 24-3. That touchdown, with just 1:52 left in the third quarter, probably iced the game for the 'Huskers. Oh, one group, a group of about 10 players, raised their hands and uttered a But that was it, that was all. They were up 24-3. So what? They were supposed to be up 24-3.

Now, instead of urging them to win a national crown, they were cheering for them NOT to lose, NOT to fall out of the Top 10 tor the first time in 11 years. Back down on the field, those Bulldogs were moving all over the sidelines. Ready to play. Finally getting their chance to play, they kicked off.

With Nebraska facing third-and-five, the cowbells got louder. A maroon helmet was shoved aloft on the sideline. The Bulldogs held, the Cornhuskers punted, the Bulldogs fumbled, the Cornhuskers scored. The game was under way and the adrenalin, the tight, drawn faces, perhaps the over-enthusiasm, already had the Dawgs down. This bench showed little enthusiasm.

They bad just scored, they bad just taken the lead, but you couldn't tell it by watching them. After all, things were only going as expected. They were the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Playing Mississippi Slate. In the Sun Bowl.

They were supposed to win. Things went from bad to worse on the other side. The 7-0 game turned into a defensive struggle. Until an interception and a long bomb upped the count to 17-0. The Mississippi State bench appeared a bit stunned certainly frustrated.

Some players slumped on the bench others sat dejectedly on top of the back of the bench still others stood, motionless, hands on hips. Nebraska trotted to the halftimelockerroom. The faces were still the same. No surprises there. Maybe there was no adrenalin.

So what? All they hd to do was look up at the scoreboard about like it was supposed to be. The second half was little different. Mississippi State was again first out of the tunnel. The Eulldogs were again first on the field. They had settled down a bit but they were still eager, still ready to play.

But, every time they scored, every time they appeared to have some momentum going, they turned the ball over. The Nebraska sideline still showed nothing. The By BILL KNIGHT Times staff writer They stood there wailing. And it didn't look easy. One player was constantly clinching and un-clinching his right fist, his left remaining open.

Another was bouncing up and down. Yet another was raising, lowering his right leg, then raising, lowering his left leg. You could see something in all those eyes while they were waiting. That glazed look, that tense, glazed look you know, the look that means the adrenalin is flowing. That was Mississippi State.

And they were waiting to play they had come to play. They didn't stand there long. Not as a unit anyway. Some ol them walked to the end of the Sun Bowl tunnel, checked out the capacity crowd. The look wasn't with this group.

They looked ready to play some lootball they didn't look READY to play some lootball. There wasn't much in the eyes. The adrenalin wasn't flowing. After a brief survey, the Nebraska Cornhuskers trotted onto the Held. That first group was followed by a single file of more redshirted Cornhuskers.

Finally, after it appeared they had all cleared the tunnel, kick returner Anthony Steels came charg' ing out the dressing room door. The cowbells oh, those cowbells. Over 6,000 Mississippi State supporters came. And every one of them must have been rattling 10 or 15 of those cowbells. The number of Bulldog supporters was twice that of the Nebraska backers.

And they made at least twice as much noise. "G-o-o-o Dawgs," was the order of the day. The enthusiasm was understandable. Mississippi State's Bulldogs were new to this bowl business. This was their first trip to a post-season game since 1974, the year they came to the Sun Bowl.

But The Big Red faithful were there, too. And they made their share of noise. But, somehow, they couldn't muster the enthusiasm of the Dawg backers. It was understandable. Just a few weeks ago the Cornhusker faithful had been cheering their favor The final gun sounded, the cowbells still clanging, the Bulldogs still trying for a last gasp touchdown, a touchdown which would have only narrowed the final margin to 31-24.

Not a day for the enthusiastic, re wed-up Mississippi State Bulldogs. Six turnovers. Perhaps it was the adrenalin, the extra enthusiasm. Whatever the case, they filed quietly off the field. Back up that tunnel they had entered with so much enthusiasm only hours before.

The looks were different now. They eyes well, the eyes were just down. The Cornhuskers watched the final quarter disinterestedly. One player sat on the bench, opening bis mouth to a large yawn. Two others looked into the stands, smiling at friends.

The final seconds ticked off and the Cornhuskers strolled off the field. Back up the tunnel they had entered hours before with basically the same look they had when the whole thing started. Watching them lea ve, one wouldn 'thave guessed they had just won a football game. The feeling was bo-hum. Mississippi State left the field without a win, a loser in the Sun Bowl.

Nebraska left the field with a bowl win. They were supposed to do that. But there was no national championship with this bowl win. And it was apparent. In the eyes, in the faces, in their every movement.

Seibel kicked the conversion point with 3 21 remaining in the game. Nebnski 31, Mississippi Stitt 10. Like their first touchdown, the Cornhuskers struck quickly, needing only two plays after Dave Liegl's 16-yard punt return to drive 63 yards. Wingback Tim McCrady barely managed to remain in bounds and made a superb catch along the right sidelines of a 55-yard bomb from Quinn. On the second play, Quinn hit tight end Jeff Finn with an eight-yard touchdown pass on a flag pattern.

The second-quarter clock showed 1:58. Seibel added the extra point. Nebnski IT, Mississippi State 0. THIRD QUARTER On their first series of the second half, the fired-up Bulldogs drove 41 yards in 13 plays to set up Dana Moore's 47-yard field goal with 7:12 remaining in the quarter. After Bond recovered his own fumble for a 20-yard loss, Nebraska was tagged with a late-hit penalty.
