uwKWlll UUUUU 1(1 i It, I'll Douglass captures second straight State Amateur on 37th By Joe Coniannoii Globe Stuff In future years, the record book wil state that Ilruce Douglass, age 22, won a second straight Slate Amateur golf championship at The Country CJub on July 10, 1976. Regrettably, it will fail to state that the opponent he beat that day was named Peter Teravainen, age 20. For, as Douglass has said, "nobody remembers who finishes second." Yet, to anyone who saw the match these two staged at this historic course yesterday, there will be no forgetting what transpired. In all of its fetching beauty, it showed what match play golf is all about. It was settled, dramatically, by Douglass, when he ran in a 22 foot putt on the 37th hole for a birdie three, a final stroke in an engrossing match that a seemingly-beaten Teravainen had sent into sudden death with an 18-foot putt for a birdie three on the 36th hole.

And yes, that was how it had gone all day, stretched out over nearly seven hours. Bathed in warm sunshine and responding to the competition at hand, these two had slugged it out to a standstill. "Never," said Douglass, "have I met a finer competitor." Never, indeed. After the morning 18, Teravainen, a junior economics major at wrested it back, with wins on the 20th and 21st. Quickly, Teravainen regained it, winning the 23d and 24th.

Then, Douglass evened it on the 29th. On that hole, he unleashed a drive estimated at 320 yards, setting him up for a six iron to the par-five green and a birdie. Undaunted, le-ravainen coaxed a seven iron into the 30th green for a birdie, then won the 31st when Douglass flew the green to go two down with five to play. On the 32d, Teravainen elected to use his driver off the fairway for his second shot. "I lost my balance and pulled the shot," he said, dejectedly.

He went into the woods, re quired two to get out and lost it. After, throwing away a chance for the win on the 15th, Douglass evened it on the par three 34th, rolling in a 25 foot birdie putt. "I needed that," said Douglass. "I was disappointed after the 15th (33d where they exchanged it with bogeys.) I put the pressure on myself to make it." He did, then won the 35th when Teravainen flew his second shot into the jungle. "I had a good lie (in rough) but I took too much club," he said.

The putt on the 36th followed a Douglass shot that was inside him. couldn't read the putt," said Teravainen. "I was just guessing. I was hoping it would stay on line." It did. Douglass missed from 12 feet and, after Teravainen exploded out of a trap to lie three, Douglass settled it.

"I said, 'It's now or never," said Douglass, who thus became only the fifth player in the history of the event (68 years) to repeat as Slate Amateur champion. Sometime, within the next year, he will leave the amateur ranks and turn professional. "I always wanted to be a performer," he said. "Of one kind or another. I can't sing.

I can't dance. I can't play basketball. It's golf." As sheer good theater, he will have to go some to equal the performance he and, yes, Teravainen put on yesterday on an historic golfing stage. Also, no one is permitted use of a golf cart or a caddie. Actually, the contestants won't give much thought to any of these things.

They are out to enjoy the day, and all the things that go with it. At the starting tee, each player will be given a tournament cap, and every entry will be a guest of The Globe at luncheon. Through the courtesy of Mr. Farina, privileges of the South Shore CC swimming pool will be extended following the rounds. This tournament is not dedicated to the proposition of producing champions, although many outstanding area golfers made their debut in it.

A striking example is offered, of course, by the home club's Dave Farina, who twice won the 11-and-under division and last year captured the 14-15 trophy with a record-matching 72. More recently, Dave was selected as a Globe All Scholastic golfer. He also won the prestigious Hornblower Memorial against adult competition this spring, and competed in last week's State Amateur at The Country Club. A boy from Framingham named Bill Mallon. 'now a touring pro, finished second to Wayne Fick back in '65.

And these are only samples. But once again the main objective is to gain the feeling of formal tournament procedure while having-a very good time. By Tom Fitzgerald Globe Staff It started with a casual conversation back in 1962. A man in the front office was wondering if it might not be a good idea to provide some pleasant and special competition lor the youngest members of the golfing community. There was the feeling that up and coming members of a new generation in the lower teens were too often regarded as tag-alongs in the publicized events for the haughty 16- and 17-year-olds.

It was agreed it might be worth a try, and with the instant cooperation of Philip Farina, there was a tournament at Phil's South Shore Country Club in Hingham, with a turnout of around 160 bright and capable young people. So it has gone over the years and tomorrow on the same South Shore playing ground there will be a gathering of about 200 for the 15th Boston Globe Youth Golf Tournament. The principal purpose is still the same. It is meant to be a day for good fun, good fellowship and demonstrably good golf. There have been some refinements of procedure and some forward-looking developments, of course, as there must be in any worthwhile venture.

And there is another on this occasion with the appearance of five young ladies in the field four in the 12-13 Division and one in the special nine-hole event for tplayers 11 and under. The other group, of course, is the 14-15 Division. Some of the con- tenders on that list are making their fourth or fifth appearance in the Globe event. Any adults who find a round of golf to be a time-consuming ordeal on a wearing weekend afternoon might profit by a visit to South Shore tomorrow. These youngsters not only play the game with surprising competence, but, with the blessing of their bright years, they don't make a ceremony of every shot.

They like to move at a lively pace, and it can be a joy to behold. There are some tournament regulations. One of these is to be observed more by the accompanying adults than by the kids themselves, Coaxing in eagle putt, Johnny Miller uses a little "English" on 13Ui hole of British Open at Southport, Eng. He won by six strokes. Story, Page 105.

The 35-year-old Palmer, at 5-foot-l the smallest woman on the pro tour, shot a two-over-par 37-36-73 for a 54-hole total of 217 over a small but tricky course that has defied the best par-breakers in the distaff Although she lost her two-stroke' second-round lead, Carner, recognized as the strongest, belter in women's golf, was still in contention as she carded a six-over-par 38-39-77 for a three-round score of 219. Carner led Palmer by two strokes starting the third round, but a triple bogey on the par-three third hole and a double bogey on the 10th turned the struggle around.

Jane Blalock, the seven-year pro from New Hampshire, also was in contention as she carded a 35-38 73 for a 54-hole score of 220. She actually tied for the lead after 10 holes, but fell back when she double bogey ed 14 and went one over par on 17. The rest of the field appeared to have succumbed to the deceptive looking 6066-yard Rolling Green course with its tree-lined fairways, slick, elevated greens and deep-set bunkers. There was only one round of par or better yesterday eight for three rounds and that was a one-under-par 35-3570 for Susie McAllister who wound up at 224, seven strokes off the pace.
