The snowstorm shut down the state for three days. Ella Grasso was everywhere, erasing doubts about who was leading state government. Public reaction was symbolized by a message seen as Mrs. Grasso and reporters flew in a helicopter over eastern Connecticut when highways were closed. Tramped in huge letters in the snow was, "Ella Help." Her opponents lost steam, and she swamped her Democratic challenger in the September primary carrying all but two of the state's 1G9 towns.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) Ella Grasso. ihe first woman in U.S. history to le elected governor without following her husband into office, died Thursday niht of complications due to cancer. She was 61.

Hartford Hospital spokesman James Battaglio said Mrs. Grasso. who had cancer of the liver and intestine, slipped into a coma early Thursday. He said she died of a heart attack after multiple organ failure. The former gov ernor had been listed in critical condition since Sunday and had slipped in and out of consciousness.

Mrs. Grasso's husband and their son and daugnter were with her when she died, Battaglio said. Mrs. Grasso. a hard worker known for frugality who was a force in Connecticut politics for some 30 years, ended her second gubernatorial term at the midway point because of liver cancer.

"I make this decision with a heavy heart but with full appreciation that the peeple's business must continue at the highest level," she said in announcing her resignation effective Dec. 31, 1980. She added. "All of my life has been one of dedication to working for people." Ella Grasso was a Democratic Parly stalwart who never lost an election. She won first in 1352 as a candidate for the state House of Representatives, served as Connecticut secretary of state and in the U.S.

Jon Hinson, a conservative Mississippi Republican, pleaded innocent Thursday to a charge of attempted sodomy and was released without bail pending a trial scheduled for May 4.

Hinson, arrested Wednesday by Capitol Police in a men's restroom in the Longworth House Office Building, remained silent at his arraignment in District of Columbia Superior Court. His plea was entered by his attorney, Joseph Clancy. Hinson was charged with committing cal sodomy, a felony. But the U.S. attorney's office reduced the charge to a misdemeanor.

Percy Russell, deputy director of Superior Court operations for the U.S. attorney's office, said it was office policy that homosexual acts between consenting adults be prosecuted as misdemeanors. In initially charging the congressman with a felony, Capitol Police had set a $2,000 bond for Hinson. But Judge William Thompson released the congressman without bond.
