BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE October 24, 1976 89 Brown convinces HC, 28-18 Theblvo Sale. (A once-in-a-decade event) By Roy Mumpton Special to The Globe PROVIDENCE For the first 30 minutes yesterday, coach John Anderson had to wonder if the hex that Holy Cross has held on Brown teams in their previous three meetings was working again. y.The underdog Crusaders, who struck quickly for an early touchdown, led 7-6 at the half and had missed three other bright scoring opportunities. But the more consistent Bruins, paced by the hard running and deft passing of senior quarterback Paul Michalko, suddenly put it all together after the intermission. They marched 75 yards following the second-half kickoff, continued in control thereafter and whipped the 1-5 Crusaders, 28-18, in an exciting scramble.

Brown, co-leaders of the Ivy League, pushed their record to 5-1 with a well-balanced veer offense, which' more than offset the unexpected troubles of their vaunted defenses. Michalko, getting good protection for his passes and sharp blocking for his runners, directed the Bruins to each of their four touchdowns. He scored the first himself on a short plunge and passed 30 yards to flanker Fred Polacek for the final" and clinching one. Michalko was too sharp a play selector for the Crusaders and have that depth which I hope we will have at Holy Cross some day. We're just too young; it takes experience and polish and we're just acquiring it," Wheelwright said.

Morton, who had another bright afternoon for HC, felt the turning (point of this see-saw struggle came midway in the third quarter. Shortly after Brown had gone ahead, 14-7, HC roared right back, with Grant Keith sweeping 16 yards and Morton zig-zagging 44 on a keeper through the middle. Morton's pass to Pat Kelly left the Crusaders with a third-and-one at the three. But a motion penalty hurt, and Kevin Rooney deflected a pass before Mike Smith's field goal attempt went wide. Brown stopped two other HC threats, then put across two quick touchdowns early in the final period.

Wally Shields veered off a tackle for 25 yards for the first after Michalko had hit Watkins for a 26-yard gain. Less than three minutes after Shields clicked, Michalko passed 31 yards to Fred Polacek for the fourth Brown score. HC charged back, with Morton lofting a 35-yard pitch to Brian Do-herty in the end zone and slicing the deficit to 28-18. But HC's next drive was stopped at the Brown 25. Morton had pitched to Crocky Nangle ior a 50-yard Crusader TD early in the first quarter.

Browr's 5-1 start is the best in the school's history since 1949. wound up with 43 yards rushing and 182 in the air. He completed 14 of 23 against the passive HC defense. "Michalko did an outstanding job for us," Anderson said, "but our whole team played very well after we came back for the second half Paul (Michalko) took advantage of the HC defensive set-ups', and we moved the ball well through the final 30 minutes. Our line play, both ways, was outstanding in the last two periods.

"But give Holy Cross credit; they played a real fine football game. They're certainly a much better team than their 1-5 record would indicate," Anderson added. The Crusaders took unexpected liberties with Brown's heralded defense, which had been ranked nationally No. 1 against scoring (6.4 point average) and seventh on yards yielded (216.8). Holy Cross, paced by the run-pass machinations of junior quarterback Bob Morton, pierced the Brown defense for 393 yards of total offense a surprising 233 of them on the ground.

"Yes, but we had trouble getting the ball into the end zone," said coach Neil Wheelwright, who made it clear that he was proud of the Purple's stout efforts. "Brown is a well-balanced football team and excellently coached; they are the best of the three Ivy League teams I have seen.
