YOU GET THE LATEST NEWS FIRST EN THE RECORD he ernon aily ecord WEATHER West Texas: Generally fair tonight and Friday. VOL. V. NO. 100 (A-P) Means Associated Press VERNON, TEXAS, THURSDAY, JUNE 12, 1930 (A-P) Means Associated Press PRICE FIVE CENTS SENATE RIGHT TO TREATY ASSERTED Captain Testifies Fire Prevented Rescue in Ship Tragedy HOME TOWN STUFF OFFICER IS CALLED IN FEDERAL PROBE RAY LAUD CHILD IS VICTIM Of AUTOMOBILE WEDNESDAY ONE KILLED, 35 INJURED IN OIL FIRE A trip through the hill country of central Texas is wrll worth the time oi anybody who has never seen the beauty of that region.

From Vernon you come south through Albany and through Cisco or Abilene. Either of these routes is good. You strike next at Coleman and go southward through Santa Anna, Brady, Mason, Fredericksburg and into San Antonio through one of the most picturesque sections any one could wish to see. The roads are good, with only hort Wretches that might give trouble in caso of heavy rains. You traverse a rugged, hilly section of country, most of which is heavily timbered and cross many running streams, varying in size from rivulets on lip to rivers, ifc There is certainly much splendid Hunting and fishing in that part of West Texas.

H. acting as chauffeur for the party from the Nab era Street boarding house, had very lit- time to study the country and he isn't much interested in either hunting or fishing. Brady is city of something like 4,000 population. It has the appearance of being larger, but since the Federal census is of such recent date one must be careful in discussing the of cities, as measured by population. Mason is a picturesque town, nestling back in the hills.

Mason doesn't have a railroad, but the town seems to be entirely content to confine its chamber of commerce statistical information to one courthouse, one standpipe and one post office. There are some quaint old buildings in Mason that give evidence of a very early settlement in that setion. They ought to pass a law requiring the owners of buildings to place dates in a conspicuous place for the benefit of tourists. In through this section of West Texas, known as the hill country, lime stone seems to have the preference as a building material. Most of the building-, are of this material, including residences, business houses, and even barns and garages.

One sees entire farms fenced with rock fences. Considering that stone is plentiful and cheap ami that wire 1 is expensive and must be hauled considerable distance it is not -ur- prising that the early settlers of the hill country made most of the improvements with stone as the principal building material. Fredericksburg is quite an interesting town. It is unique in one respect. It seems to have only street devoted to business, and that single street must be at least a mile Fredericksburg in its early history' was the center of a very large settlement of The name of the town indicates the German influence and one reads the signs on the business houses the names of business men whose names at least are unmistakably German.

The town reflects the sturdy thrifty habits its early builder AjjJ, There is much intere ting scenery Investigators Told That Vessel Within Twenty Minutes Sail Could Not Have Prevented Disaster Had it Been Summoned. In reply to questioning by Captain Charles M. Lyons, Federal steamboat inspector, the veteran captain said that all which could have been done was done.

Asked if he knew that the coast guard cutter Tampa was only 20 minutes sail away, Captain Brooks replied would have made no difference anyway." Crowell. June Dora Sue Webb, daughter of W. W.
