Diablos don't return home until Aug. 24, for final homestand of the regular season with five games with Wichita. Match-play title goes to Enriques, 1-up By Julio Lujan El Paso Times Momentum swung in Sal Enriques' direction with five holes to play Sunday, handing the Upland, collegiate golfer a 1-up victory over Las Cruces' Matt Sugarman in the the 46th Anthony Match-Play Invitational. Enriques, a 21-year-old senior-to-be at San Jose State University, won the four-day tournament in his first attempt on the short but tricky Anthony Country Club course. "At first I thought this was a short course and there 'd be not much too it," Enriques said of clinching his first victory in six match-play tournaments.

"But after a while I learned There were so many people rooting for me who I don't even know." Surprisingly, the majority of the gallery people in 27 golf carts and eight automobiles along the Rio Grande levee road were rooting for Enriques and not Sugarman, who plays at Picacho Hills Country Club. Enriques' biggest fan in the gallery was Sal Enriques who drove past some of his son's fans, saying: "That's my son." The turnaround started on 14th, a straightaway par-5 along the river. An eagle tied the match, and Enriques then birdied the 15th to grab the 1-hole lead. "Sal's six-footer on 14th turned the momentum," said caddie Jesse Alderette, the 1990 Dos Lagos club champion. "That got Sal going.

And then the birdie on 15th totally changed the game around." From there, Sugarman played catch-up under humid COHEN CEUTEO IIOriESTAIJD Midland sweeps 2 from Diablos By Steve Ramirez El Paso Times Midland Angels catcher Larry Gonzales was modest, although he said he had the best day of his professional baseball career Sunday. Gonzales hit a three-run home run and drove in six runs in Midland's 13-8 and 9-4 double-header sweep of the El Paso Diablos at Cohen Center. "I was just trying to do the same thing I always do," Gonzales said. "That's to hit something hard. Today, I just did it a little better." In the two games, Gonzales was 5-for-6 at the plate and added two second-game doubles to his first-game homer.

In the opener, Gonzales pinch-hit homer in the fifth put the Angels ahead for good, 8-7. "In all the years I've been playing, Brewers' pitchers will always come right at you," Gonzales said. "You're always going to be looking at a lot of fastballs and a lot of strikes." Enriques entered the tournament seeded No. 2, and defeated Anthony's Jamey Boone 1-up in 19 holes in Sunday morning's semifinals.

Sugarman ousted No. 1 -seeded Wes Whit-tington 3 and 2 in the other semifinal. Keith Walker, who plays at. El Paso Country Club, earned third place with a 1-up victory over Rick Valentino, from Ascarate Golf Course, in the other afternoon match. Valentino placed third last year.

At No. 18, Sugarman placed his tee shot in the middle of the fairway looking for a break. Enriques' tee shot landed in the rough to the' right of the fairway. Said Sugarman: "I was hoping he'd make a mistake, and after my second shot I felt pretty good." Enriques, though, sealed the victory when his second shot went almost 115 yards to the edge of the green for an eventual par. "I didn't think any one of us played that well," said Sugar-man.

"But, two games isn't a lot. Two more days, and we could be even again." And, that's how El Paso manager Dave Huppert wants to look at it, too. "We've got to bounce back and come back tomorrow," Huppert said. "We're only two back and still in the middle of it (the pennant race)." Jim Tatum and John Jaha were El Paso's bright spots on offense. Tatum went 2-for-4 and had an RBI in each game.

Jaha was 3-for-6 in the double-header including a two-run homer in the second game. The homer was Jaha's 22nd of the year, which tied him with Midland's Tim Salmon for the Texas League lead. "It was a bad day all around with the pitching," Huppert said. Sanford, N.C., was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy wa3 scheduled for Monday to determine the specific cause of death.

McDuffie was married with two children. His son Jeff was his crew chief. Jimmy Means slid off the track just behind McDuffie and also hit the guardrail, but he did not touch the other car and was able to scramble out of the wreck without injury. Means said of McDuffie, "He lost his brakes or something. If you lose your brakes or have any kind of problem at all (at that point), you're running too fast.

It's all flat and you go with the momentum of the car, wherever it's going to take you. This situation, nothing would have helped. The fence wasn't the problem." McDuffie was killed Sunday when his car became airborne and smashed into a tirewall and guardrail just five laps into the Budweiser at the Glen NASCAR Winston Cup race. It appeared in television replays that McDuffie's left front tire came off, triggering a 160-mph slide off the Watkins Glen International track at the end of the long straightaway the fastest part of the 2.428-mile, seven-turn road course. His car skidded through the grassy area in turn five, cutting little speed, if any.

The Pontiac flipped into the air and the driver's side slammed into the tirewall and adjoining guardrail before coming to rest on its roof. PONTAC DAIHATSU A I i.
