April 22. 1990 Cooper powers Diablos over Angels, 12-8 MIDLAND -Craig Cooper liit two home runs to lift the El Paso Diablos to a 12-8 Texas League baseball victory over Midland Saturday night 1 Paso's fifth consecutive victory improves its record to i3, tops in the West Division. Cooper, who had four hits, had a two-run triple and finished with five RBL The Diablos had season-highs in runs and hits (14) before 2,954 Midland fans. Still, El Paso needed a six-run eighth inning to beat the 1-11 Angels. The Diablos coupled six hits and two errors by Midland shortstop Kevin flora to take the lead for good. The six hits were the most by the Diablos in an inning this season. Diablo third baseman Sandy Guerrero had two hits in the inning. Consecutive singles by Ruben Escalera, Bert Heffer-nan, Jesus Alfaro adjCooper accounted for three of the runs. Guerrero's second single of the inning capped the rally. Diablo relief pitcher Robinson Garces gained his first victory of the season. After relieving starter Steve Sparks in the fifth inning, Garces allowed just two runs and two hits in the final 4 innings. He fanned six Angels. Alfaro contributed three hits and three runs for El Paso. Austin pitchers toss three-hitter at Bowie, win 4-1 By Randy Welngla Special to the El Paso Times David Gomez and Angel Vega combined for a three-utter as Austin downed Bowie 4-1 in District 1-5A baseball action Saturday at Bowie. Gomez went the first three innings, allowing two hits and one run, before giving way to Vega, who went the last four innings for the victory. The Bowie loss narrowed the 1-5A playoff race to a three-team affair between Austin, Burges and Andreas. Burges is the leader with a 10-2 league mark and Austin is second at 10-2-1. Andress is 9-2-1. Bowie dropped into a tie for fourth place with Irvin. Both teams are 7-5. "We really needed this win, Ejected especially after yesterday's loss to Irvin (15-1 on Friday)," Austin Coach Frank Del Toro said. . Austin, 14-3-2 overall, struck for two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth off Bowie's Gabe Zambrano. It was the first loss of the year for Zambrano, 5-1. Mark Flores doubled in the first Austin run and Gabby Gandara's suicide-squeeze bunt brought in the second Panther tally. Vega and Gomez had RBI singles in the fifth when Austin broke open the game. Coro-nado's Mike Davis drove in four runs with three hits. District 2-SA Eastwood 6, Socorro 0 at Eastwood Matt McDonald allowed only two hits and also drove in two runs as Eastwood, 11-8 and 7-4, downed Socorro. The win moved Eastwood ahead of Socorro and into second place. Socorro is now 11-6-1 and 64-1. M Vat 19, Parkland 2 at M Vale Sal Espinoza pitched a four-hrtter and Rttoen Tetlez rut a grand slam home run as Dei vane bounced back after suffering its first 2-5A loss Friday to Eastwood. Del VaDe still leads the district with a 9-1-1 mark. Parkland lost for the 20th time. Rtverslde 8, Ytleta 4 at YaMa Freddy De La Cruz. Art Velasquez, Danny Lopez and Bobby Bakilto had two nits each and helped Riverside down Ysteta. Riverside remained in the playoff chase with a 6-5 league mark. Ysteta feB to 9-10-1 and 5-6. Bel Air 10, Hanks 8 at Bai Air Bel Air broke open a 2-2 game with a six-run, fifth-inning rally. Bel Air is now 8-12-1 and 4-7. Issac Beard followed a three-hit game Friday with two more hits for Hanks against Bel Air. Hanks and Riverside are 6-5 and trail Socorro by one-half game. SAN ANTONKV. Mike White is the Missions' designated hitter, despite hitting just .217 in the position last year. He has justified the confidence in him, hitting .385 with 13 RBI this season.
