If Evening Glooe 35 FBI describes loansliark Kazonis as key figure in Hub underworld TO w. Jr. 's MAJOR APPLIANCES and TELEVISION r.T'-J-7'' V.7 ess informants. One was described as having furnished information on a weekly basis for more than three years and to have helped obtain 36 search warrants and the conviction of more than 30 persons on gambling or loansharking charges. This informant was said by the FBI to have known, as a result of conversations with Angiulo and his brothers, Donato and Michael, that Kazonis was a close associate of the Angiulo family.

The affidavit also said that the informant had observed meetings between Kazonis, Jerry Angiulo, Donato Angiulo and their brother, Nick, "at which time gambling and loansharking policy decisions were made." Thus, two FBI informants reportedly placed Kazonis in policy discussions with the Angiu-los. Another informant was quoted as having told the FBI that Janjigian "up to the time of his incarceration" on Oct. 1, and while sentencing, "was making collections" for the loansharking operation in the Watertown area. He was convicted May 31, 1974, after a bookmaking and loansharking investigation in which Lt. Edward Vaughan of Water-town posed as a corrupt policeman so that he could gather evidence for the FBI.

Vaughan testified before the grand jury in the Kazonis case. After Pellicci was imprisoned, the FBI uncovered an apparent attempt by the reputed Boston headquarters of underworld to preserve the lucrative loansharking operation in the Watertown-Waltham-Newton area during his absence. Pellicci had been quoted by Vaughan as saying Angiulo placed him in charge of that area after the gangland execution in early 1972 of Paul Folino, described by the FBI as former head of loansharking in the area. Kazonis was said to have been made directly responsible for seeing that Pellicci's loansharking accounts were not delinquent while he was in prison. The affidavit prepared by Vaules demonstrates the importance the FBI places on its confidential "other reliable informants" and independent investigation by the FBI, according to Vaules' affidavit.

The charges against Kazonis and the others resulted from a complaint by Manfred Hohenleitner, former operator of a hair salon on Cambridge street, West End, a loanshark victim who became a government witness and has been in protective custody and relocated under an assumed name. He was equipped with a body recorder so the FBI could hear conversations between him and those assigned to collect loan payments. Vaules said in his affidavit that he had been told by the informant that he had overheard one meeting in which Kazonis and Angiulo discussed in November, 1974 "the locating and elimination of Manfred Hohenleitner, a government witness Kazonis allegedly took over the loansharking activities of Michael Pellicci of Barbara road, Waltham, who is serving a five-year term at the Federal Penitentiary at Atlanta, Ga. Pellicci had an office on Main street, Watertown. weutsur BOKtlUKTOM MAIL Whatever Your Price Range Whatever Style of Ring She Likes Whatever Shape Diamond you will find an excellent selection at each of Long's five stores and payments may be arranged to fit your pocketbook.

Connolly Globe Staff The imprisonment of William (Slim) Kazonis, 39, of Boston's West End has put out of action a loanshark, gaming figure, operator of a businessmen's "protection" racket and one of organized crime's top decision makers, an FBI document disclosed yesterday. Kazonis, described as a close associate of Gennaro J. (Jerry) Angiulo, reputed head of organized crime in Greater Boston, was sentenced in US District Court in Boston Tuesday to eight years in Federal prison and fined $20,000 on loansharking charges. The court record showed yesterday that US Judge Walter Jay Skinner, who sentenced Kazonis, was given an FBI affidavit which reported Kazonis's alleged association with Angiulo, his loansharking activities and participation in the "protection" racket.

The affidavit, prepared by FBI Agent James H. Vaules also disclosed that Kazonis and a co-defendant, Joseph Patriz-zi, 34, of Swan Everett, had operated a weekly barbot game in Revere as recently as last Sept. 22 while out on bail in the loansharking case. Barbot is an illegal dice game. Patrizzi and three other co-defendants were sentenced on Oct.

1 to Federal prison after pleading guilty. Patrizzi was given a five-year term; Paul Sarkisian, 31, of Putnam street, Watertown, and Arman Janjigian, 40, of Warner street, Watertown, were sentenced to 15 months each; and Richard Femino, 27, of Prospect Watertown, was given a six-month sentence. Each was fined $10,000. The FBI affidavit, based on information furnished by four informants, depicted Kazonis in the role of determining the amount of money to be loaned to various customers, the interest rate to be charged and the conditions for repayment. Other documents on file in the case and prepared by Agent Vaules reported that the current rate being charged by loansharks in Greater Boston was between 4 and 8 percent per week, or 208 percent to 416 percent per year.

The affidavit, made part of the public record yesterday, quoted one FBI informant as describing the so-called "protection" racket. The document read: Patrizzi has stated that he and Kazonis received regular incomes from various businessmen in the Boston area that pay for The FBI affidavit said this of Kazonis's alleged role in underworld's policy decisions: "Informant advised that he overheard meetings between Gennaro Anguilo and William Kazonis where gambling and loansharking policy was discussed." The FBI told the court that the source of this information had assisted the FBI for more than two-and-one-half years, that the individual had identified 15 bookies and loan-sharks in the Boston area and that loansharking evi-, dence had been found through the use of three search warrants based on the informant's cooperation.
