FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 195S BLYTHEVHJ.rS (ARK.) COURIER NEWB PAGE NTH! Here Are New Facts On Motorola Color TV JOAN SHAWLEE — Bob Hope's new TV discovery, checks out the picture at close range on the Motorola big-screen color TV featured in the newly decorated Record Boom of the Hollywood Vine Street Brown Derby. Joan will soon be seen on her own network series, 'Aggie", and in the Paramount motion picture, "Conqest of Space'. ... . .Motorola's new simplified color TV chassis, named the "902" Power Drive Chassis, combines two kinds of basic units. It consists of a horizontal chassis, the familiar type used in standard monochrome sets, and a vertical chassis which plugs into It, mounted in an upright position at the back of the set. The vertical section contains most oi the color circuits, and can be easily interchanged If It has to be serviced. . . . The color chassis carries a patented high-voltage transformer with a special color super-charger. The extra power is added to increase the voltage from the 16,000 volts used in a black-and-white set to the 25,000 volts needed for color. The voltage is controlled by a circuit that uses a self-regulator tube, called the "Chroma discharge tube." This tube was developed by the company's engineers In collaboration with the Victoreen Instru- ment Company, Cleveland. . . , The color signal is received from the transmitter in the form of electrical waves. First of all, the signal is filtered to take off all the color information. The information is then modified in .two separate circuits — red and blue, using balanced diode - demodulators. After this, the two signals are adde"d together and subtracted electronically from a fixed total, to obtain the signal for the third primary color of green. Finally the three color signals are passed on to the face of the picture tube, where the actual color picture Is produced. The entire process of filtering and modifying the color signals is done instantaneously. ... A crystal-controlled oscillator that operates with an accuracy ratio of 100 million to one was developed to keep the set in perfect synchronization with the signal being transmitted. The color syn chranlter locks colors In pltct to they won't biur or drift. . . Automatic Gain Control has been amplified by adding a n*w tube - number 1JAU7. The tube compensates for variations in ilg- nal strengtli due to distance from :he transmitter, Interference, and switching from one channel to another. ... A full 1,000,000 phosphor particles are deposited photographically on the face of every 1 tube. A color television picture is very much like the pictures that appear in the Sunday comics. It is made up of many little colored dots, and the closer these dots are together, the clearer the picture. . . . Ifte color picture as seen by the viewer is made up of three separate images consisting of more than a million tiny red, blue and green dots, covering the face of the screen. Special magnetic fields are placed next to the neck of the pictuer tube to keep the picture properly registered.
