M. Ike Says Qosing Schools Can Prove to Be Disastrc Washington (Ji President Eisenhower said the closing of schools in Virginia and Arkansas can have disastrous consequences to their students and eventually to the nation. Eisenhower said there is seemingly "no present prospect of earjy resumption" of classes in schools shut down in Little Rock, and Front Royal and Charlottesville, Va. President gave his view in a letter to J. Albert Rolston, chairman of a Charlottesville committee for public education.

The committee is campaigning to keep public schools open and says it is con- Grain Storage Elevator Slated Hastings Garvey Elevators Inc. has announced plans to construct southwest of Hastings this fall a terminal grain storage elevator of 4 to 7 million bushels. 17, while Eisenhower was vacationing at Newport, seeking an expression from him. Eisenhower wrote this reply, which was a i Wednesday and made public by the White House Thursday: 'Thank you for your telegram of Sept, 17. "I deeply regret the action of Virginia and Arkansas in closing schools that are subject to integration orders of the federal courts. The direct consequences to the children in those schools and the eventual consequences to our nation could be disastrous. Their education seemingly has Jio present prospect of early resumption.

For i cessation, they are given a reason which is contrary to one of the generally accepted basic ideals of our country. "Most of us in the United States, as part of our religious faith, believe that ail men are equal in the sight of God. Indeed, our forefathers enshrined this belief in the Declaration of Independence as a self-evident truth. Just as we strive to live up to our fundamental convictions, we constantly strive to achieve this ideal of the equality of man. "We had been making progress--substantial progress -toward that goal.

Tfie closing of the schools, however, represents a material setback not only in that progress, but in what we have come to regard as a lundarnental human right the right to a public education. Margaret Eusden, Grand Island. Washington (UP!) Chairman John Gwynne of the Federal Trade Commission has struck back at congressional investigators with charges of headline hunting, a mongering, unfairness and general irresponsibility. He accused Investigators of undermining the very agencies they claim to be trying to improve. The FTC chairman, whose agency was investigated by the House influence-investigating subcommitte during the Adams-Goldfine hearings, mentioned no committees in particular in a speech to the annual Federal Bar Association convention. However, he told the investigators that "of the shoe fits put it on." "We want to keep this on a ihigh level," a I former Republican Iowa, told a reporter.

"But I they've been telling us how to operate all 'year so we think maybe we can tell them a few things." "They're all my friends," he added. Gwynne's speech preceded one by Chairman Oren Harris (D-Ark) of the influence subcommittee. The subcommittee has charged millionaire Bernard Goldfine received preferential treatment from the FTC and Federal Communications i i through his gift-giving relationship with resigning Presidential assistant Sherman Adams. Gwynne's a a came after: --The Justice Department announced former FCC member Richard Mack and Miami lawyer Thurman Whiteside probably will be arraigned here next week.
