THE EL PASO TIMES, Friday, February 20, 1980 Pare Horwitz dies; El Paso businessman esses, including The United plus his brother's' and sister's companies, The Hortex, The Texas Store and The Popular of Las Cruces. The fund provides grants, aids and scholarships for disadvantaged students at the University of Texas at El Paso. Mr. Horwitz added another $10,000 Funeral services for Abe Horwitz, founder of the Horwitz Endowment Fund, will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Harding McDaniel Montana Chapel.

Mr. Horwitz, 81, lived in El Paso for 60 years. He established the $10,000 fund in memory of all Southwest Hispanics who loyally served his family's busin- to the fund last year. His nephew, El Paso lawyer Julian Horwitz, said his uncle willed another $10,000 to the fund. A retired merchant, Mr.

Horwitz was in partnership with Oskar Rosen and Bernard Krupp in creating The United, a corporation of soft goods stores throughout the Southwest. His brother was the late Louis Hor- witz, founder of Hortex manufacturers of Billy the Kid clothing. Mr. Horwitz is survived by his nephews, Hortex executives Albert: and Henry Horwitz, Julian Horwitz and Richard J. Rosen, all of El Paso, and Robert Horwitz of Ohio; a niece, Janice Malmouth of California; and four grandnieces.

Burial will be in Mt. Sinai Cemetery. Mary Cunningham dies after surgery Public hearing to explain funding of education for the handicapped Mary Cunningham, who with her husband, former El Paso Western author Gene Cunningham, was hostess to such literary figures as Zane Grey and Earl Stanley Gardner, died Sunday in Dallas after surgery. Mrs. Cunningham, 81, was the first Yeomanette to join the United States Navy from El Paso during World War I.

Mrs. Cunningham and her husband returned to El Paso in 1925. While living in their Austin Terrace home, Mr. Cunningham wrote most of his Western novels and his historical classic "Triggernometry," still regarded as one of the most accurate reports of Western gun- fighters. He also served as literary editor of The El Paso Times.

During World War II, Mrs. Cunningham served as section director of a national defense section in San Francisco. After her husband's death in California, Mrs. Cunningham accumulated 28,000 hours as a Red Cross Volunteer at Fort Miley in San Francisco. She returned to Texas in 1970.

Mrs. Cunningham is survived by three children; Murney Call of Garland, Texas, Jean Weakley of Dallas and Col. Cleve Cunningham of Rough and Ready, seven grandchildren and five great -grandchildren. Memorial services were Monday in Dallas.
