44 Stirrup breaks, Wajda fall at Rock fatal New England horse racing fans have lost one of their most popular figures. Jockey Henry Wajda, 39, died yesterday at Bon Se-cours Hospital in Methuen after undergoing surgery following a fall at Rockingham Park on Saturday. Track officials said the accident occurred when Wajda fell from his mount, Zabush, after breaking his right stirrup when leaving the starting gate in Saturday's second race. Wajda rode Cherry Sun to a five-length victory in the first race. Wajda narrowly escaped serious injury in a spill at Lincoln Downs on May 30, 1964.

That time he was thrown forward from his mount but was able to scramble off the track narrowly avoiding the trailing horse. Wajda first gained national attention for rescuing fellow jockey Tony DeSpirito in a mishap at Suffolk Downs on June 30, 1960. DeSpirto, coinciden-tally, lost his right stirrup and was in danger of being thrown when Wajda reached alongside and controlled DeSpirto's mount with his right hand while holding his own horse under control with his left. Later that year at the Rockingham meeting, Wajda saved jockey Leo Rosendahl from serious injury in much the same manner he aided DeSpirito. On that occasion, Wajda settled Rosendahl back on his horse after the jockey's saddle began slipping.

For this he received the New England Turf Writers' Award in 1960 and the New York Turf Writers' Award in 1961. In addition, Henry Wajda will be remembered as an outstanding race rider. The 19-y ear-veteran set a world record at Rockingham on Sept. 5, 1968, when he rode Mark Anthony over a course of a mile and 70 yards in A native of Newmarket, N.H., Wajda set a record in 1966 by riding 87 winners in a single meeting at Rockingham.
