Laslo Kovacs, who effected the lustrous photography, is one craftsman who should work more often. And the stuntmen, who. under the supervision of Chuck Bail, must have worked overtime to devise some of the most thrilling, inventive, if overlong, chase sequences yet recorded on celluloid, are particularly the stars. "Dirty Harry," at least, had pretensions, but 1 "Freebie and the Bean" is one of the most reprehen- i sible film-yarns ever to subvert the original designs of the Keystone Kops. Also, it is, at mo- ments, a talented and hilarious movie, which simply confounds the muddle. The story a "love story," saith the advertisements, in a pronouncement that is possibly in- i tended to save future generations of film critics the bother of trying to perceive the movie's obvious homosexual undercurrent revolves around the havoc-wrecking efforts of two bumbling officers to stave off the assassination I of a mafioso-type for a weekend, so that airtight indictment papers can.be i served on the bigwig thug on Monday morning. These two police agents, members of the L.A. "intelligence squad," break more laws than they ac- i' uphold in their conniving, bullying, car- i speeding rush to duty.

James Caan is "Freebie," a gun-crazy, speed-crazy bull whose lunk-headed pursuit tactics invariably cause the whole-. sale injury of innocent by-' Btanders, and Alan Arkin is "Bean," a maritally-i troubled Latino (lots of superfluous "wetback" jokes here) who is less en-i thused about velocity but equally adept at mistaking common citizens for com-i mon criminals. Also on hand, for brief but winning sequences, is Valerie Harper, better knows as TVs "Rhoda," as Bean's exasperated Spanish-accented' wife, who must continually explain her whereabouts to a paranoid husband who is himself never at home, i And, in the minor roles, ranging from an incredu B.C. chorale to The Boston College Chorale will visit Rome for seven days giving several concerts under the direction of Dr. C.

Alexander Peloquin, the university's composer in residence. On Jan. 2, the 115-voice chorale 59 women and 56 men will fly from Boston and perform in Rome Jan. 5, official opening of the Holy Year, 1975. What offsets the movie, though, is its utter and callous disregard for people, a quality that shines in nearly every single, amazingly, brutal scene.

"Freebie and the Bean" revels in sequences such as: A strapping braggodo-cio challenges "Bean" to a fistfight and, after he calmly unlocks the big fellow's handcuffs, "Bean" wallops him with his hidden truncheon; the duo "execute" Michigan Phil, a gangland figure, with a spray of bullets, as the sits in. a bathroom stall in a fowling alley. -When "Freebie" is fre netically chasing a stolen car, the two battered autos (pursued and pursuer) round a corner and careen, unexpectedly and astoun-dingly, into a parade of musicians and majorettes on tap for the Tournament of Roses. Dozens (in a scene that is, again, played for laughs) are hurt. And, incidentally, the car thief safely absconds, is never seen again and only figured marginally in the narrative in the first place, just one of the many loose threads in this tattered tale.

This mix of cynicism, wit and law-'n-order, which is loathsome, is made insidiously palatable by, firstly, the broad slapstick humor and, too, by a plot gimmickry which excuses the excesses by emphasizing the villainies. A Cadillac salesman from Detroit, for example, who is confused with a mobster by the cop duo, is severely beaten in broad daylight on a city street until, his head mashed against a car window, he "confesses" that he is arranging a "rendezvouz" with his boss' wife. Plus, shades of "Dirty Harry" again, the principal baddie turns out to be (in a surprise ending that is contrived and silly) a "fag" hippie male who is also a karate sharpster. What we now know sing in Rome sition, Liturgy." The work which Dr. Peloquin calls "incidental music for the Mass," was recorded recently by the BC Chorale and will appear soon on the Gregorian Institute of America labeL Later in the day, the chorale will perform in the Church of the Gesu, the Italian speaking Jesuit congregation.

On Jan. 8, Peloquin has a concert at the North American College in the Vatican. The chorale will return to Boston Jan. 10. DDHAM frr.

So the movie fails grandly as satire. Yet it is also awkwardly humorous, so we shouldn't make the error of believing that what is abhorrent (the apotheosis is "Triumph of the Is not necessarily entertaining. Hollywood is not beyond catering to that premise, and director Richard Rush, a newcomer who reportedly this film moths ago, is evidently skilled.
