After visiting the fishing village of Villasimius, where a few hotels have arisen including the very elegant Swiss owned Capo Boi which boasts its own hunting grounds, I drove north to Sassari. The journey takes four hours and enables one to see something of the rugged interior of the island. Sardinia's main highways are good- and being raised in some sections to autostrada Approaching the north the scenery becomes more dramatic and mountainous especially as you climb the twisting road to the plateau of Sassari.

Sassari is the most important northern town and a good time to visit it is in May when they stage the colorful Cavalcarta Sarda. The town is crowded with visitors and peasants in traditional costume who congregate in the local stadium. Horsemen gallop in, standing a little precariously on their saddles. FLORIDA miles from the capital, Cagliari. It is a vast and popular complex which can accommodate 2000 guests in bungalows and the more expensive Hotel Castello. Make for the Piazza Independenza and its ancient three sided tower of San Pancrazio and then stroll to the nearby Piazza Palzzo with its own cathedral and onetime palaces. From the San Remy Bastion terrace there is a fine view over sea and city. The peeling wall of one of the old mansions, now tenements, is still pimpled with three can-nonballs fired in long long Balzac called it "an island of which one knows so little and which is yet so intriguing." That was a long time ago but still true up to the early 1950's. Sardinia remained a mysterious hermit among Mediterranean islands until former Servicemen who had been there during World War II remem- bered that it was extreme- ly beautiful and started to trickle back. Today Sardinia is no longer mysterious.

The scenic grandeur of its coast with rocky cliffs, hidden coves long stretches of sand are being I discovered by more and more tourists yearly. But i it is easy to get away from them for Sardinia, the third largest island of the Mediterranean, has some 1150 miles of coastline, only a small of which has so far been developed for tourism.
