'J3 IUSEI1UX HEAT ISy l'ETER GAMMONS Boston Sunday liloho August 13, 137U Crucial is good word to describe Sox trip ON ENTIRE STOCK i of Pittsburgh's Dock Ellis's haircurlers are baby blue, the other pink Five Pawtucket players were recently tossed off an airplane because of a hijacking joke by infielder John Mason. Dick Williams has son Ricky travelling with the A's, in full uniform (number 39) and lets him sit in the bullpen during games. Ricky, a lefthanded pitcher who will be a high school senior this year, also warms up on the sidelines and occasionally throws batting practice. "His fastball is a changeup," says Orlando Cepeda Williams thinks righthander "Chuck Dobson, once a good pitcher who hurt his arm and sat out all '72, may help in September but bluntly says he has no plans of recalling Lew Krausse Ken Holtzman, who was one of the bad trades the Cubs made, says that collapsing team's biggest problem is that there are too many veteran players who know they'll never be traded. Sounds familiar The Cubs, incidentally, are going to have to completely overhaul their team Angels' centerfielder Ken Berry is superb defensively, but he's not as good as Messers.

Stanley, Miller and Blair because he plays too deep A week or so ago Braves' pitcher Ron Schueler cost himself a complete game when he chugged a glass of ice water and developed stomach cramps. Tonight the Red Sox fly to Texas for the beginning of a 14-game road trip that won't necessarily make, but most certainly could break in to cremated ashes this team that sometimes needs Oral Roberts 1o turn it around. The Sox, because pitching and speed are more important in most other ballparks, have played untraditionally well on the road. Since there are so many pitchable hitters in the lineup, it has been a mediocre team at home. But these next two weeks, which are the lead-in to the final month of inter-divisional play, could provide the answers to several questions: Have the wrist and hand of Carl Yastnemski and Doug Griffin been the reasons for their mediocrity? Is Luis Aparicio finally 39 years old, as he looked a couple of times recently? If so, is Mario Guerrero an adequate successor? Are Reggie Smith and Rico Petro-celli going to play? And if Reggie does, is he going to concentrate on winning? Can Carlton Fisk recuperate and get turned around? Can Luis Tiant free himself of all the little annoying physical problems and be the stopper he was at this time in 1972, something this team desperately needs? If half or more are answered in the negative, than chances are this will finish as another second division team (for the 10th time in 15 years) and make for a very long September.

Red Sox farm director Ed Kenney says this year's draft appears to be the best the club has had in years, with No.

2 Fred Lynn doing very well at Bristol along with righthanded pitchers Curran Perci-val and Jimmy Lease, while third baseman Lanny Phillips has done well at Winston-Salem. Number one choice Ted Cox has surprised them as a defensive shortstop at Elmira, but his hitting as yet hasn't been spectacular. Before we get carried away, 1972s number one, Joel Bishop, was a bust Several people, including Pittsburgh superscout Howie Haig, are high on W-S reliever Barry Sbragia, a knuckle -curve bailer from Washington State East Boston and UMass first baseman Bob Hansen has come back from a terrible start at Evansville to hit .280 and might get a September trial with Milwaukee as a DH. while Reading first baseman John Doherty (.324 at Salt Lake City) will probably get a trial with the Angels At least Reggie Smith didn't do what Reggie Jackson did and punch out a fan, but Mr. Jackson is making an awfully good run at John Mayberry for MVP.

Baseball must be a great game to have survived its present leadership. Oh, that Judge Landis or JVIr. Kuhn were still alive. Two years ago, NY's Gene Michael and Cleveland's Sam McDowell had a fight and a Minnesota promoter wanted to get them Into the ring.

He failed, but did put it into it computer and determined McDowell vould win in four rounds. Well, he's now put Carlton Fisk and Thurmon Munson into the computer and determined that fisk would win by KO in the second round Trainer Buddy LeRoux says He doubts Orlando Cepeda could be ready play first base in the world series (now, there's a presumption).
