RACE RESULTS Comments by Rob Peeters Finish Start Driver Car No. Laps Comment 4 32 Alexander Rossi 27 200 too much to say about Rossi in this amount of space. Rossi started 32nd but finished fourth and led a lap. 5 14 Ryan Hunter-Reay 28 200 A very solid outing for the 2014 winner, ran around mid-pack until climbing through the field to finish in the top 5.

6 2 Simon Pagenaud 22 200 Ran up front, but fell short of expectations for Penske standards, only leading one lap. 7 21 Carlos Munoz 29 200 In his first start of the year, Munoz led late and recorded his fifth 500 top-10 finish. 8 4 Josef Newgarden 1 200 Ran well most of the race, but the defending series champ only managed to lead three laps. 9 18 Robert Wickens 6 200 The best finishing rookie in the field, Wickens led late and was the highest finishing SPM car after the team struggled for speed all month. 10 30 Graham Rahal 15 200 After struggling significantly during qualifying and starting 30th, Rahal found himself in the thick of things late, and likely will enjoy this hard-earned top 10.

11 27 JR Hildebrand 66 200 After starting 27th, Hildebrand gave Dreyer Reinbold Racing its best 500 finish since Townsend 14th in 2015. 12 12 Marco Andretti 98 200 The Andretti luck stayed clear of Marco this year, but a 12th place finish is not what anyone expected. 13 11 Matheus Leist 4 200 Last Freedom 100 winner was fast during qualifications and ran a great, smart race all day. 14 22 Gabby Chaves 88 200 Another respectable run for Harding Racing and Chaves. Was in the lead pack late, and ended with a solid 14th-place run.

15 23 Stefan Wilson 25 200 Great strategy kept Wilson at the front during pit cycles, but after taking the lead with less than 10 to go, was forced to give up the lead for fuel. 16 31 Jack Harvey 60 200 Forced to pit with 5 laps to go, Harvey was up front late, but had to settle for 16th in his second 500. 17 26 Oriol Servia 64 200 Tried to make it on fuel late, but even with a late yellow flag, it was not enough for the Spaniard to pull off the upset. 18 15 Charlie Kimball 23 200 Not best 500 outing, but a fine finish for him with his brand new Carlin team. 19 13 Zach Claman De Melo 19 199 An impressive run for the rookie, having led seven laps thanks to interesting pit strategy from his Dale Coyne team.

20 6 Spencer Pigot 21 199 Surprisingly, despite a sixth-place start, Pigot was never a factor. 21 33 Conor Daly 17 199 After starting last, Daly survived an uneventful day and recorded his best finish in the 500. 22 20 Max Chilton 59 198 After leading the most laps last year, Chilton struggled most of the day with his new Carlin team. 23 25 Zach Veach 26 198 A Lap 103 pit fire was about the most eventful thing to happen to Veach in his second 500. 24 28 Jay Howard 7 193 Seldom a factor all day, Howard ended the day seven laps down.

25 10 Tony Kanaan 14 187 Kanaan led 19 laps and had a strong car, but a flat tire at the halfway point then a spin with 12 laps to go ended his chances at another 500 win. 26 24 Sage Karam 24 154 Recording his fourth straight DNF in the 500, Karam showed speed, but a lap 155 crash ended the day. 27 8 Helio Castroneves 3 145 Going for four comes up short again after a spin ended day. 28 5 Sebastien Bourdais 18 137 Fast all month and led his first ever laps in the 500, a crash in turn 3 cost Bourdais a shot at milk. 29 17 Kyle Kaiser 32 110 Mechanical problems brought an early end to Indy Lights champion day.

30 7 Danica Patrick 13 67 In her final career start, Patrick recorded only her second DNF at the 500 after a Turn 2 spin. 31 29 Ed Jones 10 57 Last third-place finisher spun in Turn 2 on lap 58, ending his day. 32 16 Takuma Sato 30 46 The defending champion struggled for speed all month, but a crash with James Davison ended his day. 33 19 James Davison 33 45 After bumping James Hinchcliffe, Davison was slow most of the day and crashed early.
