A MAKERS NAME jT ON EVERY PAIR, i fy 1 i SAM BYRD KEN HARRELSON A most incredible price for this genuine 22.50 value! "Mungo fanned him four times, so on the way back to the hotel, Byrd turned to his roommate and said, 'The next time Mungo pitches, we'll both be Byrd still follows baseball as closely as he can in the papers, but has lost contact with his old teammates. Golf is his game now, and has been for over 30 years. 'I love to teach. What I work on are forces.

I work from the center out, never talk about the club head. I work on the back and legs, centrifugal force with a moving center," he explained, quickly losing his listener. He picked Lee Trevino to beat Jack Nicklaus in the Open playoff. "I ws a pro at Merion four years, and I know the course," he said. "It's not for the long hitter but the straight hitter and the putter Trevino." Byrd won the first tournament in which he ever played the Southeast PGA, while he was still playing baseball, and he won what he said was his last tournament the Senior Pro in 1967, when he was three under par for 36 holes.

"A good record to quit with," he said. "I was shaking on my putts in the last one, just like Hogan, and that's something nobody escapes." He played with some of the best Walter Hagan, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson and won their respect as a golfer. Ellsworth Vines went from tennis to golf with some success; Babe Didrickson Zaharias stepped supremely from the running track to the tee. But only Sammy Byrd among baseball players has made good on the tour. Gerry Priddy, the infielder who tried it in the 1950s, was an instant flop.

IN BROWN WHITE OR BLACK WHITE Bjr Harold Kaese, Globe Staff Ken Harrelson may move in as baseball's biggest contribution to golf, but until he does, Sammy Byrd remains the king. Sammy Byrd was an authentic big league player who made the grade magna cum laude in pro golf. He is the pro today at the Country Club in Anniston, where he not only teaches his pupils, but sometimes regales them with stories about Babe Ruth. On Harrelson's future as a circuit pro, he chose not to predict.

"I hear he's a good golfer, but I know nothing of his swing," said Byrd. "What kind of a pressure swing has he got, or can he develop? If he hasn't got a swing that will stand up under pressure, he'd better forget it. He'll have no team to help him. He's on his own." Concentration, application, practice, determination Harrelson will need them all to improve his game to the point where he can be a money winner on the tour, according to Byrd. "When I quit baseball, I was 29 years old, and they said it would take five years for me to be good enough to play with the best," said Byrd.

"They had it right. I worked hard and kept improving, but it was nine years I was 39 years old before I reached my peak." At his peak, or near it, Byrd won a few big tournaments the Victory Open (the World War II substitute for the US Open) in 1943 at Chicago; the 1945 Texas Open, where he was 16 under par; the Philadelphia Inquirer Open, where his rounds were 66-67-69-71, he thought. "I won $5001 at Philadelphia, and it was a record then," said Byrd. "Before long, George May came along in Chicago and put up a lot more money." Byrd tied for 12th in the 1942 Open at Chicago, with 283. He was 16th at Philadelphia with 292 in 1939, only three years after he left the Cincinnati Reds.

"I'd won a little money playing tournament golf my last years in baseball," Byrd said. "In those days, was a lot to win. My best year was I finished second to Byron Nelson five times and won three tournaments, one the Big Four at Detroit, where I beat Nelson, Doug McSpadden and Craig Wood. "The circuit wasn't like it is today. Half the players were club pros, the other half touring pros.

"I think it's easier now to take make money as a playing pro. They pay off the top 75 or 80 finishers now. In my day, they paid off the first 15 or so, and those who finished 12 or 15 got about $25." Bobby Jones once rated Byrd one of the greatest drivers. "I was long and accurate, and a pretty good putter, although no Runyan or Revolta. Every dog has his day, and I had mine on the greens, but I remember winning a tournament in Mobile when I could hardly putt at all." Byrd was an outfielder with the Yankees five sea- sons, with the Reds two.

Today he would be called "a fourth outfielder." He averaged 106 games a season, has a lifetime average of .274. "Babe Ruth's caddy," he was called, because he finished so many games for Ruth, his friend and golfing pigeon. Byrd who hit only an occasional home run, outdrove Ruth, who hit 714 homers, by 60 yards. "Ruth drove only with his arms. They told him to stand straight up.

He couldn't coordinate his body. I could, so I got a lot more power." Paul Richards used to say that Sammy Byrd had the best thing in baseball playing golf with Babe Ruth for money. "I didn't take all the Babe's money," said Byrd. 'We'd only play a $10 Nassau or so, and I might win from $50 to $100. The Babe was straight, but it bothered him that I out-drove him so much." Byrd said he had seen Ruth hit a home run while hitting the ball six inches from his fist and breaking his bat, and another over the left-center field fence while checking his swing.

"It's right he didn't remember names. In the outfield, he used to yell over to me, "Who's pitching for us today? "Once he started introducing the Yankee players to the governor. First was Tony Lazzeri, and he said, "This is the Next was Dickey and he couldn't think of his name, so he said the governor. 'Excuse me. It's my turn to He grabbed a bat and headed for the plate, where the Washington team had been hitting for 10 minutes." Ernie Lombardi tells a story about Byrd when he was with the Reds.

"Mungo was pitching that day in Brooklyn, and Byrd's roommate said, 'I'm sick. I can't "'Well, I'm feeling said Byrd. Til take a crack at Mungo or anybody 'ilchrist's 3 AUTO CENTERS 4 mi BROCKTON BOSTON STONEHAM Milts Harrison Ave. at Traveler Street 1 Redstone Shopping Ctr.ffoe. '28.

By Bryan Dench, Globe Correspondent The blank in the score-book next to "Playing site" was filled in with "Houston Astrodome," and even though we all knew better, that didn't spoil the fun. The actual site was De-Fillipo Field in the North End, and the action was two All-Star games put on by North End Neighborhood Basketball League Director, Bob DeCristoforo, last Thursday night. DeCristoforo held 15-and-under and 19-and-under games involving the North End's top talent, complete with public address announcer and trophies for the players of all teams.

The East took the 19-and-under match, 56-44, over the West, with Bob Ferrara (15 points for the East) and Eliot Zizza (12 points for the West) sharing the MVP honors. In the 15-and-under match a team from Charles-town, which competes regularly in the North End, dropped the North End' All-Stars, 50-39. One interested spectator at the 15-and-under game was Fred Carangelo, winner of one of the first two BNBL Jack Crump Memorial Awards for Service. MODEL 3400 DISTRIBUTED BY J.
