But professional analysts and investors sound as if they're fighting their way out of a maze rather than gazing at surefire investment strategy. The self-questioning goes to the extremes, depending on to whom you're talking. Buy Curtiss-Wright, a prime U.S. beneficiary of any shift to Wankel because of its licensing rights, for a quick spurt? Or buy it for the long pull? Or unload that Curtiss in a hurry took advantage of the public excitement and unloaded their Curtiss stock to eager small buyers while the price was spurting for several days.

The stock has been sliding since the initial euphoria. Also Curtiss-Wright holds the North American licensing rights to the Wankel engine and would get some. revenue from worldwide sales. It had been announced many months earlier that GM had bought a nonexclusive Wankel license from Curtiss-Wright. But the question Wall Street wanted answered was whether or not GM would be able to solve some Wankel problems and proceed with production thus virtually forcing the entire auto industry to follow suit.

Other U. S. automakers have remained noncommittal on their plans although Chrysler panned the Wankel heavily two months ago and Ford has been reported by reliable industry sources to be moving in the direction of a Wankel -powered car. Was the GM announcement and buy later, hopefully cheaper? Or buy Gleason Works for its role in tooling up for the Wankel? Or has Gleason already made its run in the market? Or buy stock in Toyo Kogyo, Japanese maker of the Mazda car which is already exceeding its sales goals in the United States? Or has Toyo Kogyo stock climbed too far, too fast? Then there's the multitude of supplier corporations built upon the piston engine era. If the piston engine goes, how many firms will suffer, and which ones? The rotary engine has only 40 per cent as many moving parts as a comparable piston engine.

That alone could mean major upheavals for many firms. Some professionals are convinced that everyone should heed the stock market traditional advice: "Sell on the good news."
