And she becomes involved in a family feud, the continual quarrelling between the husband of the mentally sick woman and his younger brother, who loves his brother's wife and accuses him of having driven her crazy.

A happy ending is arranged for the nurse and the long-suffering husband. It's unbelievable, but a common way of ending things to suit the public. And it keeps "I Walked With a Zombie" from being a first-class horror film. But it's good enough for the attention of horror film lovers. Here, at the Paramount Theatre, with Alan Ladd as the hero and Harry James" orchestra to back it up, it will do big business, but I don't predict that it will be a box office competitor of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" over the country. ft. Featuring- Loretta Youne, Alan SUSPENSEFUL" -M I should see it to see Japanese bru Ladd and William Bendix, this tality for a change from Nazi viciousness. Besides Miss Young, Ladd and William Bendix, the cast is made up of Chinese players, all of whom give the picture an authentic air. John Farrow's direction keeps "China" moving along without faltering.

Considering that the story, by Archibald Forbes, is not powerfully dramatic. Farrow has done a superb job. But he had no trouble with Miss Young, Ladd and Bendix, all of whom do their best. Of course, Harry James and his music makers are playing no small part in drawing in the record crowds at the Paramount. Featured with this popular band are Helen Forrest, Buddy Moreno, Corky Corcoran, Johnny McAfee, Dave Barry, Evelyn Farney and the Golden Gate Quartet.

drama, telling of the roles an American school teacher and an American oil salesman play in the war between China and Japan" before Pearl Harbor, is an absorbing picture but not poitrnant because the dramatic highlights are a little hard to believe. Miss Young, as Carolyn Brent, head of a Chinese girls' school, is a little too enthusiastic about saving China and Alan Ladd, as Mr. Jones, is too bard to convince that he is doing the wrong thing by selling oil to the Japs. 'China" movs along slowly, yet evenly, depicting the horrors cf war and the brutality of the invader, as it shows the conflict between the school teacher and the mercenary Mr. Jones.

After he is converted, the picture resembles the Hemingway story of the Spanish Revolution. It falls to Mr. Jones to blow up a bridge so that an enemy invasion will be checked long enough for Chinese troops to meet them. And though there are no sleeping bag sequences, Carolyn and Mr. Jones confess their love for each other lying side by side on the ground the night they're waiting for the enemy.

It's strange that Paramount would make "China" and exhibit it before "For Whom the Bell Tolls," this company's most ambitious production of '43, is released to the ROSALIND RUSSELL FRED MacMDRRAY WHh HERBERT MARSHALL cnwifin CUIMELU WilTER IIIBSF0H1I Short Specialty ar An RKO-Rodio Picture FALA Tha President' Dog i "I Walked With a Zombie," spine-chilling horror film, is perfectly at home on the Rialto Theatre's screen. It's good "escape" stuff, this RKO Radio production. Frances Dee, James Ellison and Tom Conway carry the important roles. A most dramatic beginning is offset by the confusion in the ending, but it will still give you the creeps, pretty nearly all the way through.
