Two Veteran Lincoln Police Officers Retire from force Lincoln F.M-IIJIIK Journal and ftobnifika State Journal Wednesday, May 3, 13 By Bill Kreifel Two men, who were as much a part of Lincoln police Dept. as .38 pistols and gruis- er cars, have left the department after long service. They are Ora Landess, and Walter both of whom are still working for the city but not in law enforcement. Landess, 65, who live? at 2504 T. retired after 17 years to take a position as parking meter repairman, trading in a suit of blue and a cruiser for a gray uniform and a 3-wheeled motor scooter.

Rowden, or "Rowdy" as he is known, had 23 years as a lawman. Rowdy started on the department in the 20s and Landess Rowden worked up to night captain before leaving to become captain of guards at the State Penitentiary. He was later appointed superintendent at the now defunct Genoa state prison farm. He later re-joined the department and upon retiring was supply a in charge of everything from uniforms to tire marking chalk. Every new i -who started on the department received a rough greeting from the white-haired veteran and as the men became better acquainted, an occasional cuff behind the ear was "Rowdy's" good morning "hello." "Rowdy was never happy unless the i would punch him as they walked by or snarl at him so he could snarl back," grinned Asst.

Chief Willis Manchester. "If you didn't act that way, Rowdy thought you were mad at him," he chuckled. Manchester said Rowden has accepted a post as a city inspector and will work out' of Safety Director Emmett Junge's office. "It'll really be different around here without Landess and Rowdy," said the assistant chief. "Just as if someone removed two permanent fixtures." Chief Joe a said Landess retired at a partial pension which is allowed to a man with 15 years service who reaches age 60.

Rowden, said the chief, will receive a full pension by virtue of having more than 21 yeaTs of service. He said because the police retirement plan does not fall under Social Security, the men are entitled to both a pension plus whatever they may earn at new jobs not connected with the police dept.
