The war's dead have died in vain if nothing more comes of their sacrifices than such ill-advised memorials as "Cor-regidor." It's Sally's story that the youngster is her nephew, but she agrees, under pressure from her agent, to keep the infant out of sight until she lands the lead role and has signed on the dotted line with a big producer known as Rocks. What with one jealous chorine trying to queer the deal and a group of well-wisherstrriving to claim the baby when finally he's discovered by Rock, things get muddled enough to call themselves a plot of sorts. Besides the girls of the Revue, who strut their stuff at frequent intervals, there are such musical attractions as Ted Fio Rito's Orchestra, the Mills Brothers and that two-toned singing clown, Candy Candido. Gale Storm and Robert Lowery also dress up their romancing with a bit of song. Fix Truck Tolls In Connecticut Bridgeport, May 27 (JP).

Washinirton does as the background for an insipid love story full of Alf onse and Gaston gestures over the feminine third of a triangle. Shouldn't Be Desecrated. Undoubtedly there was such a thing as love on Corregidor, but, when any one spot on the map has assumed as much significance as the island fortress finally surrendered to the Japs, no movie company ought to desecrate it by overshadowing the big drama with a clumsily faked variety. I rather doubt, and certainly the film at the Globe doesn't make it convincing, that Corregidor ever saw a doctor like Jan Stockman. Few people in few places, furthermore, ever have seen a man so obsessed with, or so obvious about, giving his wife away to a man she says she doesn't want.

Dialogue Mush. There's far more than too much dialogue that sounds like "You take her, my friend," and "No, you keep her, chum." Especially with a blitz going full tilt and nobody taking the Japs, meanwhile. Anyhow, it's pretty childish play for a couple of grown-up men who're presumably trying to preserve a patch of empire, and won't further the careers of anybody connected with production. Most gratifying is Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer'a screen adaptation of the Lynn Root play which Ethel made popular several seasons back. Miss Waters is still the shining light in the picture but the book has bsen embellished with the addition of excellent colored talent, including Duke Ellington's Orchestra, Louis Armstrong and Lena Horne, the captivating 6inger who made such a hit in her recent Tun at the Savoy-Plaza. And, of course, Rochester, Jack Benny's Man Friday, is a credit to any comedy, particularly to this one. The Eternal Conflict. A delightful fantasy, the story concerns itself with a good, woman's reformation of her weak husband and the fight that goes on between his good side and his bad Bide with a representative of the Lord pulling his soul one way and an agent of the devil pulling it the other way.

Mostly, it's all pretty amusing, sometimes hilariously funny. Under Vincente Minnelli's direction, the film moves evenly if rot swiftly. Toward the finale, the action slows up but not with detriment to the production. Ether" Waters' performance as the woman who has faith in the Lord and in the eventual reforma- tion of her husband is done with the simplicity and sincerity that has endeared her to the public. And she sings her songs as only she can sing.

Eddie Anderson is highly amusing as the husband torn between loyalty to his wife and the call of the dice and of the charmer, Georgia Brown. Sweet Georgia Brown! Lena Horne plays Georgia Brown; Rex Ingram, Lucifer and Kenneth Spencer, the Lord's general. Others who do small bits well are Manton Moreland, Willie Best, Oscar Polk, Butterfly McQueen and Moke and Poke. To the two songs of the stage play, "Cabin in the Sky" and "Taking a Chance on Love," by Vernon Duke and John Latouche, M-G-M has added "Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe," "Life's Full O' Consequences" and "Li'l Black Sheep," by E. Y.
