EDT, over Henry took over the CBS five minute sponsored program in September, 1943.

This nightly news capsule has been an estab lished feature of CBS since De cember, 1939, when it was first handled by Elmer Davis. Henry's preparation of the 5' minute script is a long day's task. From 6 o'clock in the morning until he goes on the air that eve ning, he selects and edits the news for those few topical items he delivers in slightly less than four minutes of broadcast time (about 600 words). His morning hours are spent at one Washington press con ferences or at Congressional hearings. His luncheons are planned to include government of ficials, Congressmen, or international figures visiting Washing ton.

Throughout the day he ots terse notes. At 7.30 he is ready! to write his script. In one hour he makes his final selection, places the items in proper se quence, has someone read the script to him, and then "Bill Henry and the News" goes on the air. His only other news activity is a daily column for the Los Angeles Times. The natural de sire for editorial comment is sat isfied by the newspaper column; the CBS news capsule is cold, hard top news.
