Boston Sunday Globe November 5, 1972 76 Jjucknell lines cut UMass string, 28-15 9 for 31, a fumble and a seat on the bench). But Bucknell (now 5-2) won the game where coaches always tell you games are won in the line. One hero for the victors was sophomore quarterback Don Rubright, who in his first varsity start picked apart the UMass secondary (187 yards, 13 ball at the Bucknell 33 on a bad punt, drove to the 13 and seemed certain to score. But Pennington threw where Schubert wasn't, at the goal line, and there was another interception. But the game was far jrom over.

Pennington was replaced' by Mark Tripucka in the third quarter, and Tripucka took the Minutemen right in, for a score. Then he hit Tim Berra for the two points and it was 21-15. UMass finally had some momentum and there was a whole quarter left to play. With 11:25 left in the contest, it came to the biggest play of the game for UMass. It was fourth and four at the Bucknell 41.

So Tripucka went back to pass, and as 1 he tried to throw for Befra, big Bucknell who played against Yogi in the "50 Series) batted the pass down. And momentum was gone. Bucknell drove and scored with less than 1:30 left. And UMass is 6-1. Bucknell's offensive line pushed UMass's tackles all over the field.

And their defensive line? Pennington, who had trouble with his footing to start with, was running for his life all day and got sacked Six times. Paul Metallo never got outside on the sweeps as his linemen were being shovedback. Once, the Minutemen started on their own 44 and punted from their six. 'Nough. said.

In fact, it got to be 21-0 for Bucknell midway through the second quarter and UMass had one first down and had not reached it own 35. A Steve Schubert gallop with a slant-in pass made it 21-7 in that second quarter. At the end of the half, UMass got the ON.

"It was my fault and mine alone.

The kids turned it around and made a great comeback; then I violated the first rule of good football." He was talking about a decision he made with 11:52 remaining. It was 21-15, Bucknell, and UMass had a fourth-and-four at the Bucknell 41. "We had momentum," said Mac-Pherson. "Mark (Tripucka) brought us back and had just gotten the two-point conversion and I got cocky. We had to kick because our defense was stopping them.

We should have kicked it down there and since they had punting problems, we would have had great field position. "But I had to go and take it away from them." Tripucka's pass was batted down. "It's a damned shame. And I feel awful. Just awful.

"But give Fred Prenders and Bucknell credit. They came to play. They took advantage of our young secondary, they outhit us all day and a big thing was that they never allowed us to get a kickoff or punt runback, and Steve. Schubert's run-backs are part of our arsenal." There is little question that UMass came down here thinking about Holy Cross and BC. "If so, said MacPherson, "it's the fault of the coaches.

It's our job to have the kids prepared." Across the way, Prenders was babbling. "We just thought that they were a little weak on defense at the guards and tackles and maybe we could get them thinking by throwing the ball. UMass is a great team, the best we've played. But our kids out-hit them." PETER GAMMONS Vermont 0 0 0 1515 Moine 7. 7 0 014 final game of the season.
