IS Present Catches Up With Lawrence and Simmons Simmons Whiz Kid. By United Press International Brooks Lawrence, an all- star pitcher 4 years ago, was one of the principal casualties as National League teams reduced their rosters to the 25-pIayer limit Wednesday night. Another "name" player cut was southpaw pitcher Curt Simmons of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phils handed Simmons, the one-time National League pitching ace, his outright release. The Phils also sent Chris Short to Buffalo, bringing their roster to the 25-player limit.

The Cincinnati Reds optioned Lawrence to Indianapolis of the American Assn. on a 24-hour recall basis. The 35-year-old right- hander had pitched only 7 'ii innings this year and allowed 12 runs, all in relief assignments. The Reds acquired Lawrence in 1956 from the St. Louis Cardinals.

Effective in 1957 lie won his first 13 games that season and was named to the National League All- Star team, finishing the year with a nifty 19-10 record. Lawrence was equally as effective in 1957 when he led the Reds' pitchers in victories as he posted a 16-3 mark. But he slipped to an record the following year and wound up in the 'Cincinnati bullpen last season, finishing with a 7-12 mark. The Chicago Cubs pared down to the limit by shipping 3 players to llouston and recalling infielder Jerry Kindall from the same American Association team. Pitcher Al Schroll was released outright to Houston while catcher Moe Thacker and infielder Sammy Drake were farmed out on 24-hour recall.
