It is common for people to take these heaters into a bedroom and place them near the bed, Chief Dolan reported. Then, during the night, they turn, or throw off the covers.

The oniy type of space heater that is allowable is the large, permanently mounted type that is connected to a chimney flue and has the oil container at least 42 inches away from the heater.8 But these are expensive, compared to the $15 to $25 price of a "cremator." In the space heaters took countless lives across the country and caused millions of dollars in age. In 1959,: the Boston Fire under Chief John Clougherty, undertook a study of the cause of spaee heater fires. It took two years of research to find out why these things exploded. In 1961, armed with evidence, the department went to the Legislature seeking to have space heaters outlawed.

During the same year, space heaters caused 159 fires and took 15 lives in the city. the fire department prevailed and in 1962 SPACE HEATERS Continued from Page 1 The intense cold of the last two" months caused many immigrants in the city to buy up hundreds of space heaters. The unfortunate part of the matter is that the dealers who sold these "cremators" knew they were going to be used in a place of habitation. This time it's aimed at the Italian and Spanish-speaking people in the city.

Within a week, posters will be appearing in all parts of the city where these folks live, pointing out in language how dangerous space heaters are to life and property. "We -hope it works," Chief Dolan said. "I would hate to see a repeat of the '50s when night after night we went out only to find that we were too late. The space heater had taken more lives." Chief Dolan said the principal cause of fires from the portable space heaters is the fact they are allegedly portable. "People pick them up by the handle and carry them from one room to another," he said.

Dist. Atty. Henry Kara, the government prosecutor, placed Miss Patricia A. McKenna, 20, of West Rox-bury on the witness stand. She testified she was the girl friend of Ronald A.

Hubbard, 24, of Baird a taxi driver, who was also slain, Dec. 21, in Roxbury. Miss McKenna said she lived at the Baird st. address and heard both Hubbard and "Larry" Thomas, admit killing a cabbie. She said both men returned to the apartment with wallet, money and credit card of a cab driver.

i Thomas' counsel, Atty. Reuben Dawkins, under cross-examination, got from Miss McKenna that she did not know if the personal belongings were of the slain, cab driver Allen. At this point, the government rested its case. Judge Troy told the government prosecutor he had not "presented a case." He said "I do not read newspapers, except the Christian Science Monitor and Wall Street Journal. I know nothing about this case." He then found no probable cause and dismissed the murder complaint against Thomas.
