HE TURNED WEST AT THAT LIGHT rrTI By Percy Shain Globe Staff Joe Kapp, like so many other star athletes before him, has turned to acting as a source of revenue.

After a year and a half of enforced idleness because of his contract squabble with the New England Patriots, he finds i a pleasant and profitable enterprise and looks for a solid career in pictures and TV. This week he makes his series debut in an episode of CBS's "Medical Center," now being filmed at MGM, and a few weeks ago he completed a rugged role in an NBC "World Premier" titled "Climb an Angry Mountain." In between he filmed what he called a "cameo role" in a Walt Disney movie, "The World's Greatest Athlete," working in partnership with Howard Cosell as booth announcers. Now there are lots of offers on his doorstep and he feels his new career is on the upswing whether he ever plays another game of football. "It isn't that I have been exactly idle since I wound up with the Patriots in December of '70," said the personable quarterback in a phone call from his Belmont home, just outside San Francisco. "My business interests have kept me hopping.

I saved up something in 11 years of pro football and have extensive involvement in real estate and apartment house construction in this area and Vancouver, where I am co-owner of a hotel. "But my advisers seem to think I have a future in the acting business. Goodness knows I'm no pretty face, so they are leaning toward heavy types for me. I am a sympathetic villian, if you can call it that, in the NBC film an Indian who has been picked up on a bum manslaughter rap and is running from the police. "It is a very physical part, I get into some fights; I have an auto accident; and of course I run a lot I have a white wife, Stella Stevens.

Fess Parker is the sheriff and Barry Nelson the cop who's after me. It's due to be aired early next season as a Parker pilot. "In 'Medical Center I play a role more my type, a football coach. The story, titled 'The Gladiator, is related to the drug scene. My assistant, oddly enough, is Marvin Goux, whom I played against when he was at USC and where he is an assistant coach now.

It's a key role but I'm not the guest star. It's a good way to break into series TV." Joe doesn't care much for the Patriots, but he has nothing but praise for rookie quarterback Jim 1 1 1, who took his place last Fall. "He's the best first-year quarterback in the history of the game," was Joe's confident assertion. one else I know broke in as fast and as phenomenally as he did. Frank Tarkenton came right off the campus to play for the Minnesota Vikings, but he didn't have the first year that Plunkett did.

"This kid has everything to be outstanding one of the great stars of the game. He is strong, passes with; precision, and has great leadership potential It takes any rookie and particularly a quarterback a long time to get used to his shoes in the pro game. Playing every offensive down, as Jim did, he learned doubly fast It was an amazing year. "Playing with a team that is just starting to rebuild, he has an unparalleled opportunity. If the boys play together, which, is an important consideration, he'll turn that team into a winner, and maybe a champion.

"Because of our common Mexican-American i-tage, I'm very proud of him and sorry we couldn't have worked together. I don't know him that well, though our paths frequently cross, and of course I have kept in close touch with his career since his Stanford days." Kapp's position in his suit against football is, "I have a contract to play two more years for the Patriots and I want to do it. "The reserve clause hitch is only part of the problem. It's a complicated issue, as you'd know if you saw the 20-page brief on file in Federal Court. I consult my lawyer weekly and even daily, but he has no idea when it's going to come up." ns 1 Snr Rf R.C.
