Boston Evening Globe Wednesday, June 28, 1972 71 "jf Ufa' $850 puts Thomas hi harness clover By Marvin Pave, Globe Staff FOXBORO Twenty years ago, Mattapan resident Al Thomas made an $850 investment. He bought a mare named Mary Frances at a Pennsylvania auction and entered the world of harness racing. The dividends are still coming in. Last night, when Bay State Raceway opened its summer meeting, Thomas sat in his box and puffed contentedly on a cigar. He thought back to the early days when a veteran trainer the late Al Simon, started Thomas in the horse owning business.

never thought then I'd be so successful" said Thomas. "Mary Frances was the daughter of the late, Great Adios. One year after I bought her, the Adios offspring started to win races all around the circuit. Eventually, I took Mary Frances off the track, and used her for breeding." The result has been sensational two of the Mary Frances "family" have made Thomas mighty happy. Lord Roger, who will race here Saturday in a $10,000 stake, has won $200,000 and is only six years old.

Lord Bill is up around the $100,000 vicinity. "It looks good on paper," said Thomas, "but I'm certainly not a millionaire. I have eight horses that run, and A GOOD NIGHT FOR FOXBORO TO OPEN ITS SUMMER MEETING AT LEAST 9714 PERSONS THOUGHT SO. (Laurence Welsh photo) Plausse began at Foxboro in the publicity department and has kept going up the ladder. Featured race winners last evening were Freight Train, in the $3500 fourth.

Gene Minbar in the Sixth, and heavy favorite Red Ripple in the ninth. The last two were $4000 mile paces. they each cost about a year for the upkeep. Plus, 10 percent of the money goes to my Bobby Stiles." Still, it's not a bad return for 850 bucks. TROTTING TALES The opening night handle for 10 races was $464,912, a little over $50,000 less than a year ago.

The attendance was 9714. Roger Smith of Bangor, M. is the new starter here. Former Tufts University and Natick High football coach Henry Plausse just retired after 35 years of teaching in Natick is holding a new position at the track, that of State Racing steward. 2 offers a breakthrough the schedule. Two each will be with Canadiens and Rangers and one with Chicago. The two fights last night on closed-circuit TV will be shown on Wide World of Sports Saturday p.m.) in their entirety. Bill O'Connell's light-touch review of the Coaches Ail-American Game on "Five on Sports" Monday night was a masterpiece The rest of th show failed to produce the little league discussion as publicized, but that topic will be covered on Paul Benzequin's 9 a.m. program Friday, with ex-big leaguer Clem Labine providing the negative side.

The format calls for matches on the same three days for eight consecutive weeks if necessary until either Fischer or Spassky gets 12 points. One point is awarded for a victory, a half -point for a tie. Now the bad news for chess folks.

The coverage on Ch. 2 will run only one week unless $3500 in contributions are received from the public, the cost for the full eight weeks. For those of us ignorant of the game, good old Wide World of Sports will come in each Saturday starting July 8 with a recapitulation of the three previous days' action. Bill Flemming, a familiar and friendly voice, will be the commentator, with Larry Evans as the expert. A special spice will be provided by ABC cameras that will be taping at the scene.

Fischer's demand for privacy apparently is exceeded by his quest for money the network reportedly is paying $100,000 in rights fees for the coverage. The participants will get a piece of it, although the Russian's share may well end up in the Kremlin petty-cash coffin. In any case, both the Ch. 7 and local Ch. 5 coverage will be unique- And only the chess hardcore probably will really be able to grade the coverage.

AROUND THE DIAL: The Bruins will televise 70 games on Ch. 38 in the upcoming season plus five exhibition games, which could turn out to be the best part of The 25 -year wait by the chess crowd since televiison's inception is about to end, thanks to the fame of Bobby Fischer- Both Channel 2 and the American Broadcasting Co. yesterday revealed plans for coverage of the American's' world-title match with the Russian Boris Spassky, which begins Sunday. No live coverage will be available from Iceland for two reasons, the concentration factor and the dead air time. But Ch.

2, through Eastern Education New-tork and Public Broadcasting hookups will provide the next best thing: simulated moves on camera immediately after they occur, with experts in an Albany, N.Y. studio to explain and speculate about counter plays. Iceland is five hours ahead of Boston, so the matches on Ch. 2 will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday of next week, ending at 4 p.m.

on the first and third days and at 3 p.m. on the second day. If the matches extend beyond the five-hour TV time limit, Ch. 2 will offer one-minute summaries at 5, 5:30 and 6 p.m. The hookup to Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland and site of the matches, will be via teletype, with a phone line to provide instant color appraisals, presumably describing the players' facial grimaces.
