The Boston Globe Saturday, July 8, 1972 19 -y FLINTSTONES Bt Hanna-Barbera Ed Power's detom to soap opera you haven't lost I Birr nivN CAN'T STEVE ROPER MIKE NOMAD ITT' i ii i SLvnji i ii i is ZB' ACK LOOKS months, but before it was over, I heard about the fledgling 'Love Is A Many Splendored made the cast of that, too, as Spencer Garrison, the am- bitious state senator, and I've been with it ever since. The serial, seen weekdays at 1 on CBS (Ch. 7), is now 4 years old, and I celebrated my fourth anniversary with it in June." Power, who will be 36 in September, has remained single since his divorce, "though I have a girl friend who is not exactly my fiancee," and he maintains an apartment in the upper West Side. His four children, who live with their remarried mother in Dover, N.H., are Mark, 15; Beth, 13; Chris, 11; and Greg, 10. Ed gets back to these parts only occasionally these days, to visit his children, his mother in Concord, N.H., or his uncle and aunt, Dr.

and Mrs. Lew Rosenfield, in Boston's Prudential Center, who maintain a dentistry office in Maiden. motel books for living expenses." His intention to become a teacher in the humanities was sidetracked by a stint in the armed services, where he served as a special assistant in the anti-ballistic missiles division in Colorado Springs, going in as a first lieutenant and coming out as a captain. By then he had been divorced from his wife, had seen other aspects of life, and decided that an $8500 salary for an assistant professorship was "just not enough to live on." "I drove my car from Colorado to New York, sold it there, and got a job bartending in the upper East Side. Then I started banging on doors, to see if I could do something in TV.

"When I heard a local panel show was starting on Ch. Ill applied for the job as emcee, got it after a series of auditions, and within a few months we were on the air. It was called 'Guess My and brought together astrology buffs and celebrities. "It lasted only for six "By then we were living in Hampton, N.H., so I en-tered the University of New Hampshire. I had a tuition scholarship but had to work my way through school in the construction business, working mainly in a Hampton apartment project and later as a motel assistant.

"It was a tough regimen a full 40-hour week at the job while assimilating my studies at Durham with sufficient aptitude to earn my BA and MA there in English literature. "Another reason I needed money: I met and married a local girl during my freshman year and by the time I was a senior we had four children. That kept my nose to the grindstone. "I used to work nights from midnight to 8 a.m., keeping books at a nearby motel, then go right from there to school. Then, when I wanted to further my education, aiming for a PhD in philosophy, I switched to Emory University in Atlanta, where Iobtaineda three-year scholarship, again keeping By Percy Shain Globe Staff It was a strange detour on life's path indeed for handsome Ed Power, who started out to be a priest and indeed attended a Brookline monastery for 18 months and wound up as an actor in a soap opera instead.

Nothing could have been further from his mind than playing make-believe when young Ed had to cope with the realities of a strict Catholic home in his boyhood. Life was very grim and earnest in those days. Tve worked hard as long as I can remember, he recalled. "I was born in Medford, and after my father's death we moved to Winchester when I was 2. As the second youngest of a family of six, I was expected to carry my share of the load.

I had a paper route and did all the chores that were usual for a boy of tender years. "It was in high school that my thoughts turned to the priesthood. My upbringing was strongly religious and I attended Ma-tignon High in Cambridge, where I played football as an end for two years. "After graduation I entered the Carmelite Monastery Cambridge and spent a year and a half there before realizing that my personality was not suited to the cloth. Even then, I guess, I was something of an exhibitionist arid yearned for a more cqtorful calling.
