Mystery Explorer IV Finds Intense Layer of Radiation Activity Said to Increase As Higher Altitudes Reached Moscow UPI Young Explorer IV is fulfilling its mission to measure the enormously intense band of mystery radiation around the earth, says an American scientist. The word is that radiation keeps getting more intense up to the height measured so far with no signs of its decreasing, said Dr. Ernest Ray, physicist at Iowa State University. Gauges are counting 6,000 high energy particles per square inch per second. Whether this can be harmful to human astronauts is still not clear.

Russia's Sputnik III also finds this radiation gets hotter the higher you go, Soviet scientists reported in a series of papers. One American expert says he believes the Soviets are giving out all their data now when they have it. Most of the total radiation measured appears due to low energy electrons and are not high energy particles. At the altitude, radiation gives exposure equal to two roentgens (X-rays) per hour. A space vehickle might zip through without harm if radiation does not extend too far out.

But shielding probably will be needed to protect humans aboard research satellites which would be circling the earth like the Explorers and the Sputnkis. Explorer IV's first report covered three days, July 2629. All detectors are operating properly. They are finding that radiation intensity increases seyeral thousand fold between 200 and 1,000 miles with a rapid rise starting at 250 miles. Big Balloon Rips; Down Come Monkey, Goldfisft Crosby, Minn.

(AP)--A mammoth balloon, taller than a 20 story building failed in an attempt to reach the edge of space and floated to earth 75 miles southeast of its launching site. The unmanned balloon, biggest ever flown, reached an altitude of about 60,000 feet with its cargo of a monkey and several other animals, then ruptured. A spokesman for AVinzen Research, Minneapolis, builder of the huge plastic bag, said a tracking plane spotted the balloon on the ground near the Minnesota- Wisconsin border. An Air Force ground party recoverdc the monkey and other animals alive. A spokesman said it still was not known what caused the monkey bearing balloon to fail.

The Winzen spokesman said the cargo apparently was carried to earth by the crippled, balloon. Although it broke open, the 5 million cubic foot bag did not shatter. The flight was the second failure of attempts to put such a balloon into space. An identical balloon carrying only instruments burst at 40,000 feet July 30 when it was struck by a strong Jetstream wind. Thursday's experiment carried a female frogs, goldfish and some smaller organisms on the flight destined to reach 135,000 feet.

Gen. S. E. Anderson, chief of the Air Force Research and Development Command in Washington said the flight was designed "to gather information on cosmic radiation --a potential hazard to space operations."
