Decision Needed, Denver. ANSWER. You should lead a small diamond. The bidding sounds as though dummy has a good club suit for discards. Further, the five no-trump bid places all the aces with the opponents.

Your reasoning should be, "Partner has few high cards. If I lead diamonds, I may be successful if he has as little as the queen. If I lead hearts, partner must have (both the king and queen for success (or only the king if behind the ace). The chances are better for him to hold only one key card instead of two." Your aim is to establish a trick as quickly as possible which you can cash when in (hopefully) with the trump king. USA A i.

i '-fiiioir'iiriitiiiiiwMrriTi(iiiiiiBrniHifiif iiHiiTifitiiniiiiiK By Ira G. Corn Jr. Dear Mr. Com: In a recent rubber bridge game my right-hand opponent opened with three spades. I doubled, but my partner bid four hearts, which went down five.

How should the bidding have gone? My Hand Partner's AAQ10 4 A 2 VJ 864 2 0 10 6 0 A 9 7 4 3 AK5 4 Q7 Down and Disappointed, Birmingham, Ala. ANSWER. Preemptive bids often represent the most difficult bidding problems. With the hand you held, your possible contract ranged from a part score to a grand slam. It appears, however, that you and partner were playing a different system.

Your double was obviously intended for penalty, but your partner interpreted it otherwise. Many players do play the double for penalties, though most play it for takeout. Either method is workable, but only when both partners use it the same way. If using the most popular treatment, your hand is not the right kind for a take- out double because of the singleton heart. Three no-trump would, be a reasonable gamble and a pass the only alternative.

In no case would I expect to reach the six-diamond slam after that aggravating three-spade bid. Incidentally, how did declarer go down five? By Jay Hatch D-day, of course, is decimalisation day. It is principally the day on which Great Britain, namely Feb. 15, will shift completely to a decimal, system on its postage stamps. The chief dollar unit will still be the pound and still worth $2.40 and the pound denomination will continue.

The rest of the stamps will be based on this pound divided by 100 pence. Other nations have either jumped the gun on Great Britain or will follow suit. Here in the U.S. we already have the decimal system for our postage. There are people who feel we may have to go completely metric, in weights and measurements, although Great Britain was under 1 heavier pressure than us because of its proximity to the European market which is metric and decimal.

Ireland will change over Feb. 15, using the current beautiful stylized designs Of the current, and comparatively new, definitive set based on early Irish Christian art. The will be dropped in the design, leaving the numerals. The Channel Islands, Guernsey and Jersey, are following suit. There are many others.

THE CAMERA EYE As West, what should I have led? A 109 8 3 OKQ1042 Q52 Which Card? Pittsburgh. ANSWER. It sounds very much as though dummy has only two spades and one or two hearts. Your partner, therefore, has five or six hearts and will get some tricks there unless declarer can ruff them in dummy. You should lead a trump.

Winter scenery calls for special treatment In this particular environment where light is the brightest, the fast action of shutter speed should be brought into use. "This group of over 5000 members is believed to be one of the oldest, continuously active public school alumni groups in the country," Averill said. Stevens High School is named in honor of Paran Stevens, a native of Claremont. With little formal education, Mr.

Stevens became a nationally known hotel keeper in the' mid-1800's and amassed a considerable fortune. In 1866, he offered to match funds with the Town of Claremont for the establishment of a high school. This was done, and the school opened in September, 1868, with the first class graduating in 1871. An Alumni Parade is held each June in Claremont and this year it is anticipated there will be a three-hour parade with groups from all over New England participating in the centennial celebration. By Gilbert Friedberg Globe Staff We could give winter photography a lot of space and yet just scratch the surface.

Winter sports such as skiing, tobogganing, sledding, skating, or just hiking can keep your camera busy for months. We note of late the frequent number of pictures made of winterscapes. But, unfortunately, repetition makes most of these pictures commonplace. Composition should be the key word in winter scenes, but most amateurs are taking the easy way out. Perhaps it's because cameras are too difficult to maneuver or that hands, covered with gloves, make the art too difficult.

In the countryside where snow has fallen in quantity, snow-laden trees are the key for composition. An example of this can be used frequently in framing your pictures, whether they are black and white prints or colored slides. Framing can be a way for bringing attention to that part of the scene you wish to accentuate, whether it be skier, sledder or skater. For fast action sports, the word is "fast shutter." As a matter of fact, with this in mind, filters (black and white) should be attached at all times to the more sophisticated cameras. Types such as the orange (G), deep yellow (K3) or for experimentation the red (A). Blue-violet rays emanating at high altitude atmosphere or snow and ice reflections must be neutralized and filterage is the only way to do tl-ls.

From past experiences, 400 film (B W), but at all times we have kept the filler in front of lens and removed it only when we wished to use the slower film (Plus-X or equivalent, ASA 160) and other filters. An added thought is the Infra-Red filter which cuts down light even more, but it does deepen many of the pastel shades, particularly the blue sky, and one should read film instruction sheet, before handling this super filter. The use of the filter is equally "important when using color films, but only such filter as the more transparent skylight (nearly clear) calls for and the polarizing filter which is somewhat denser, but which gives excellent results in not-so-bright sun or in open shade with no sun on subject. Since most (nearly all) movie film is of the color variety, filters equal to what we have been advocating for stills should at the top of your priority list. i i.

Black to move, and he'll win.

What is best? Answer below. Looking back, 1970 was something of a good year in chess. It was the year in which Robert J. Fischer terminated his silence, caused by what he called "hang-ups," and came back to tournament play, to defeat Petrosian in a match, win tournaments in Yugoslavia and Argentina by fantastic, unheard-of pluralities, and come at the head of the Interzonals. His record was marred only by a loss to Spassky in the Olympiade and one to Larsen in the Interzonals.

Fischer says Spassky was lucky in their game and that it will be different next time. It was the year in which Russia defeated the world in the match of the century, and by the precious margin of one point, and won the Olympiade (though Korchnoi fell asleep and failed to show up at one game). But strangely it was the year in which the Russian School centennial medal Centrally situated, the stadium has been a source of income that has been hard to match elsewhere. Further, its razing will strip the Rochester Crusaders of a home field and conceivably could lead to their demise. With the Syracuse Brigadiers on the brink of extinction, the loss of the Crusaders could deal a severe blow to the northeast.

Minus a senior corps and its sponsorship, junior feeders would be seriously threatened. On the surface, the whole matter could be easily chalked off as a localized problem. But it goes farther than that. It is certain to be felt by fans and corps alike fromBaltimore to Boston. The emotional aspect of drum corps personnel was visible in the Sugar Bowl classic.

The crack Air Force corps, accompanyng the football team to New Orleans, reflected its dejection over the outcome of the game with a surprising lack of marching precision in half-time exhibition. Musical efforts were limited to an opening fanfare and a few bars with, the Air Force band joining in on the nine-minute, presentation. Intervals and dressing of Bennett Morrill "Three no trump."
