S. Hart in those days, did NOT graduate into films from a Wild West show and on and on. But why weren't Robinson's blunders corrected by his editor, Peter Cowie, who gets title-page credit? We must assume, then, that Cowie didn't know the F.B.O. story, either. PAUL F.

'serious' music Two Brandeis University professors of music have received 1970-71 awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).

Harold S. Shapero of Na-tick, the Waller Naumberg Professor of Music and Arthur Berger of Cambridge, the Fine Professor of Music, were honored for their contributions in the area of "serious" music. A member of the Brandies faculty since 1951, Prof. Shapero is currently directing the Brandeis Electronic Music Program. He and his daughter, Hannah, 17, recently recorded "Pieces for Piano and Electronic Synthesizer," a composition that has since been performed at college music festivals across the country.

-Don Craain. Herald Traveler Time Magazine 3IIIIIIIIIHI iiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig; separated the Armistice from the Wall Street crash," Robinson Bays in his introduction. There's an overtone of conceit pretentiousness to that statement which, by the way, isn't particularly true. What Robinson has done is written dozens of vignettes in a style which is reminiscent of the old time fan mag gossipy approach. It's quite evident, however, that the author is no film buff.

Otherwise, for example, in writing about Lon Chaney, he never would have omitted the titles of the greatest starring films of that "man with a thousand faces" "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" and "The Phantom of the Opera." And how could one intelligenty appraise the work of Harold Lloyd without any reference to "The Freshman," "Grandma's Boy," and "Speedy," his little masterpieces? Someone with a good working knowledge of this decade in film production can turn to any page and find glaring errors of omission and commission. Consider these entries: Robinson makes only a fleeting reference to "a firm called F.B.O." Doesn't he know that F.B.O. (Film Booking Offices) was headed by Joseph P. Kennedy (President John F. Kennedy's father and that with the advent of the sound film, be I INTRODUCING As HOLLYWOOD IN THE TWENTIES, by David Robinson.

Paperback Library, New York City, 220 $1.25. One of the most prolific and richest eras of Hollywood motion picture production was the 1920s, or more accurately, the years between the end of World War I and the coming of the "talkies" in 1929. Anyone looking to read more than what can only be described as a general introduction to this great period of silent films would be far better off to ignore this volume and instead turn to Terry Ramsaye's "A Million And One Nights" (although that cuts off in midstream, 1925-1926) or Paul Rota's "The Film Till Now," And those are only two books in a large library currently available on the subject. The author confesses that all he was really able to accomplish was to take a bird's eye view of the ways of Fatty Arbuckle, Clara Bow, Charlie Chaplin, Lon Chaney, Douglas Fairbanks, Greta Garbo, Har- old Lloyd, Mary Pickford, Gloria Swanson, Rudolph Valentino et al. "My concern has been to show the films and filmmakers of this period both in their relationsip to the industry and to the general background of American life and culture in that extraordinary epoch which SUBURBAN i ii SAVOY "There Was a Crooked Man." 10.
