39 THEATERARTS The Boston Globe Thursday, September 17, 1970 Movie 'Performance' strangely fascinating posterously bad movie it's difficult to explain its fascination. But fascinating it is, in a bizzare, perverse, intellectual comic-strip way. The straightforward (Kevin Kelly is retiming erf or mane which opened at a Sack Theater in Boston yesterday, from Xeiv York City. A representative of Sack Theaters notified Kelly July 23 that he was "no longer welcome" at Sack previrws or in any Sack Theater in Boston, lid.) story line is slipped between endless cinematic ellipsis in a deliberately pretentious explosion of movie-making technique But, finally, when the last zoom stabbed its subject (literally through the brain) and when the last iris opened and closed on an extravagant detail finally I realized that "Performance" was little more than an act, a surface display covering a vacuum. A fairly stylish London hood named Charles (James Fox) is involved in a protections-racket as a bully-boy.

In an over-zealous rebuttal to the savage beating given him by a man he is supposed to protect, he murders the man and then hot-foots it to escape the vengeance of his own organization. He finds a grubby basement room in an elaborate town house owned by a former pop singer named Turner (Mick Jagger), who shares the above-stairs quarters in decadent bliss with two strange girls (Anita By Kevin Kelly Globe Staff NEW YORK "Performance" is such a pre-- limit: n.rrnaTrsTTri THE MUSICAL REVELATION SUBURBAN 1 1 rA' "J) may be taken as a fantas-ied outpost of a moribund civilization. But all this is after-the-fact decoration which "Performance" self-consciously puts before us, but, without any reason. The center of a vacuum is zero, no matter how curled and wavering its lines. Under the direction of Cammell and Nicholas Roeg, the script is effectively handled.

James Fox is brilliantly restrained as Charles', so restrained he succeeds in parodying the role. Mick Jagger, with thickly carmined lips, long straggled hair, looks like Liza Minelli aping Fredric Chopin, but he exudes a weary insouciance that settles in the film like a vapor and suits it well. The two roommates in his life are competently played by Miss Tallenberg and Miss Breton. In a kind of waltz of seduction (the waltz bleated out loud and hard on a Moog Synthesizer), Charles is led into the fantastic life style that daily (and nightly) takes place above his basement ceiling.

At first he finds it perverted. There are mushrooms sprinkled with drugs to suck and strange sexual variations to savor. There's a seemingly continual and voluptuous display of sadism, masochism, transvestism, lesbianism and voyeurism. In addition there are some very odd changes in identity. As all this is going on, the organization is at work.

So is Charles. Having once dyed his hair kidney-red to alter his image, he now fits himself with a long-haired wig for a passport photo. His destination is America. Then he is double-crossed and the organization, like a specific visual embodiment of the threat in Harold Pinter's "The Birthday Party," moves in for the kill.

Charles is skirted away in a white, sepulchral Rolls-Royce, but not until he has shot Turner straight through the brain. Despite the vaguely Pin-teresque pretentions in Donald Cammell's script, my reference to Pinter is merely in passing. Cammell's work is nothing more than a criminal thriller given an odd slant. There are oblique references to illusion and reality and, I guess, the metaphor of Turner's town house Stage, music "HAIR" Wilbur Theater at 8:30.
