17 MASSACHUSETTS POLL HANDYMAN'S WIFE Brooke most popular politician Vacation time: fix-up time? The Boston Globe Wednesday, July 15, 1970 Tui Mats, Pub. AecEcnis WE BET -pmBjX YOU $500! I 1 guarantee installation in I 1 2 wookj or wt will give you elf The Purchase Price I lifts) ftVt By Lucia Bonaiuto In the summertime there's a very simple way to tell the difference between a genuine handyman and the casual putterer. Just ask him to take you on a vacation. If he says yes, he's not the real article. To the dyed-in-the-wool handyman there's a vast difference between taking a vacation and going away on vacation.

Taking a vacation is simply the act of staying away from one's usual place of employment for a pre-determined period of time with full consent of employer and, hopefully, with full wages. Going away on vacation is another matter entirely. If where you'd like to go is not within a 10-mile range of the lumber store don't get your hopes up. I think the full-blooded handyman feels a sort of disloyalty when he strays too far from his year-long hobby. As if he'd given it his word to fix it, mend it and never leave it.

Secretary of State John Davorert, although largely unknown by state voters, attracted a noticeable negative reaction of 10 percent. Similarly, Speaker of the House David Bartley is little known, yet has a rather high amount of criticism 11 percent. Bartley's and Senate President Donahue's public images appear to suffer from widespread public dissatisfaction with the Legislature's performance. Twenty percent of those who disapprove of the way the Legislature operates also disapprove of Bartley. In Donahue's case, the number is greater 35 percent.

The Massachusetts Poll is based on personal interviews held in the homes of 786 residents and accurate to within plus or minus 3 to 5 percent of the results obtainable by polling the entire population. The findings are weighed to assure that Boston, its suburbs and the rest of the state receives representation proportionate to its share of the population. Edward W. The fifth in line, former Lt Gov. Francis Bellotti, trails far behind, with 46 percent favoring him. Despite a noticeable anti-Kennedy reaction, the senator is still far ahead of Republican opponents in general popularity. Josiah (Si) Spaulding, the convention's choice, has a favor ability rating of 16 percent. His opponent in the Republican primary, John J.

McCarthy, has 19 percent. Among gubernatorial candidates, Gov. Sargent is well ahead of all Democrats except Mayor White. The mayor's overall popularity is about equal to Sargent's. Both are well liked by their own party members, the opposing party and Independents.

Both do well in Boston's suburbs, but White slows down in the western part of the state. The mayor receives more criticism in Boston than Gov. Sargent does. Of the remaining Democratic contenders, Bellotti is highest, getting 46 percent avorability, with Senate President Maurice Donahue and Kenneth O'Donnell about the same 35 percent. O'Donnell receives the least criticism, with 8 percent, while Bellotti is disliked by 26 percent and Donahue 20 percent.

Among candidates for Democratic and Republican lieutenant governors, (excluding Donald wight) none has widespread popularity or unpopularity because of their low public visibility. Atty. Gen. Robert Quinn with 37 percent favorable toward him, was sixth in popularity. Even so, 57 percent were not familiar enough with him to form an opinion.

for OTHER His wife and children, on the other hand, are under the naive impression that it would do dear old Dad a world of good to get away from it all and gambol on the beach with them for a couple of weeks. Perish the thought. To our handyman the prospect of living in rented quarters which are off-limits to his tear-down-and-rebuild urge is enough to drive him over the sand dunes. His idea of a "day" at the beach is to drive to the nearest body of water, jump in and swim for a full 20 minutes and then head for home and hammer. I guess the idea of three whole weeks of rupted projects is the height of pleasure to the indomitable fix-it man.

And in the meantime we really aren't at all that deprived. We can always "go home to mother" for a few days. Take the kids to Grandma's, that is. And day-trips are fun what with beach time and such. Besides, we had a sample of what Father likes to do on vacation a year or two running and his irate of speed on vacation is even greater than his rate of accomplishment around the house.

Not road-speed, just a steady foot trail from one historic sight to another or spectacular views over drops of a thousand feet (I have a fear of heights) or one of his famous quick swims at a beach a hundred miles from home. Of course in the back of my mind there's a project which could really be the piece de resistance when he's finally finished with all that needs to be done to our present houre. It will keep him from fearing the trauma of running out of things to do around here. He could draw up plans for a summer house of our own. Or buy a neglected cottage and re-do it to his hearts content.

This would give us the best of both worlds. On weekends and for his whdle vacation, he could hammer and saw and design all day long while we head for the beach with our pails and shovels knowing that we're happy, Dad's happy and if he's seized with the desire for a swim he can take his whole 20-minute break at his doorstep. 6 Counties of Esiex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth and Suffolk, exelad- NARROW FRAME lni Po, ta conducted exclusively for The Globe by Becker Research Corp. of Cambridge.) 3 Channel Aluminum Combination Windows Doors IN WHITE AND MATCHING Senate votes $1 billion for birth control plan Skindivers hunt for murder clue in quarry PEABODY Skin-divers searched an abandoned quarry yesterday for clues in the gangland-type slaying of a Lynn man whose body was found here late Monday. It estimated that 5.4 million American women are now unable to afford these services.

The committee said the bill sets explicit safeguards to make sure that birth control information and services are made available on a strictly voluntary basis. The new population office would be part of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. It would a program of Federal assistance to states, public agencies and nonprofit organizations for familv planning projects manpow er training, construction of facilities, and population control research. For the next five years, 1 the bill authorizes spending of more than $991 million. Actual financing would be subject to later appropriations bills.

ABCD to get $557,589 for family plans A Federal grant announced yesterday will extend family planning services to about 10,000 low income residents about half of those who need them. At a press conference announcing an office of Economic Opportunity grant of $557,589 to Action for Boston Community Development (ABCO), the director of ABCD said that within the next year he hopes to finance 100 percent coverage for low income women who need family planning help. The ramifications of the program will extend beyond family planning, added ABCD Director Robert M. Corad. "The very introduction of an effective family planning program may be instrumental in upgrading other family health terviccs," he said.
