Because of delays, both on the ground and in the air, at Kennedy Airport in New York, 18 international jets put down to refuel at Bangor and to allow more than 3000 passengers to clear customs in relative ease before pressing on to New York. The jets took on thousands of dollars worth of fuel.

The passengers spent hundreds of dollars on food and other items. And Trans East Airlines, which operates the airport under a 35-year lease from the city, couldn't have been happier. Trans East runs the show at the former Dow Air Force Base everything from soup to nuts (spare parts variety). Chairman Norman Kaye reckons each plane that lands is worth $500 to his firm. Monday was a good day for Trans East, too.

Humble Oil came through with a $500,000 loan (five years at 10 percent), which allowed the company to junk its plans for a secondary stock offering. According to Kaye, part of the deal with Humble gives that company first refusal on Trans East should it ever be on the block. Though things are beginning to look up for Trans East, the company has seen some turbulence. The company was incorporated in 1963" as a third level air carrier. Last February, that part of the business was terminated.

"We gave it five years and still were not making any money," said Kaye. One of the services that disappeared was between Hanscom Field in Bedford and La Guardia in New York. "We used (De Haviland) Twin Otters, which have a cruising speed of 170 m.p.h.," Kaye said. The journey took 75 minutes and most travelers preferred to drive in ni 1 1 Groy wta I0H 10 7 IO3. It was, perhaps, a bigger loser than other services linking Manchester, Laconia and Lebanon, N.H. and Portland, Me. Kaye suggests somewhat ruefully that it may still be some time before the third-level carriers fly into the black. "They may never do so unless they get some sort of subsidy," he said. Though it was dropped almost a year ago, the flying part of Trans East's business is still not completly behind it.

Figures for the year ended Nov. 30 are not yet ready. They will show a deficit, though, largely due to the company's ill-fated third tier activities. There are indications that Trans East's hopes for Bangor's airport have not been misplaced. An oil company study of the airport, which became commercial in July 1968, told officials to expect to sell an average of 5 million gallons of jet fuel a year in the first three years of operation, building to a 10 million gallon peak after 10 years.

What actually happened was this: 1968 (five months), 100 aircraft services, 15,000 passengers handles. 1 million gallons of fuel pumped. 1969, 1500 planes, 150,000 passengers, 15 million gallons. Now the estimate is that 26 million gallons of fuel will be pumped this year and 100 million in 1980. Kaye reckons that might even be conservative.

Anyway, he's looking for 3077 planes, 300,000 passengers and 27 million gallons of fuel this year. He claims that international carriers sometimes gain turnabout time in New York by stopping to refuel and put passengers through customs in Bangor. When such an aircraft eventually arrives in New Y'ork it can bypass the international terminal and unload at its own terminal, sometimes saving two hours or more in downtime. He also says that more and more Europe-bound charter flights originating Jf.i4 M4l 30 u'i-u( 'i'l 1X14 7 3 1 1 21 17 5 914 28'a 144 18 17 74 834 7Vi 3'4 273 10', 7li 0 6V4 tv, 24'i 4'i ,7 26 184 II 10 1I-4J 10 19V, 173, 3 8 3 6 52 22 17 26 7 9'4 10 1 2V. 4 J4 3H- '4 PocNwTel 1 5'j 5 a 5V PocPiL of 5 15 14s, 15 4-3, pocSwAjr 40 4074 Pohcd a .32 13'a 1334 137 4- 'a Pontsot 4 133 13 13 Vi Pormnt Pka 27V, 2Tft 271, Vj Pork Ctl 103 10 10 Pork El 6if 634 634 Porkian Hos 5 4'4 4'4 Porsons RM 53 -e 534 Pot ppao 36 40 39'a 397a 4 PotoCon lr3 163 163 Peoo Gal 23'a 23 23'4 14 Peel Eider lr-3, 16 16 a a Penn En 50a S5, 54 53 PenoBStl ID 4't -4a 5'4 '4 Pentron El 26 27' Peo Boys .84 I3'j 13" 13' 3 PtP line 1434 14 a 14 Permoneer 7' 65, 3a pmiLaD ll'a 183.
