48 Boston tvcmng Globe iucUay, February 1, l) t'i James Garner joins other stars rejected by viewers this season '5 4 So now he's adding 10 hours a week. His opinion of the season as a whole: "Dull and humdrum. The only things that stood out were 'Homecoming' (CBS), 'Brian's Song' (ABC), Mia Farrow in 'Goodbye, Raggedy Ann' (CBS), and the Julie and Carol special (CBS)." mm "In that late slot we can show more adult pictures, such as the 'Priest's which will open our second week of movies, Feb. 21, Strawberry Statement and 'The That doesn't mean we'll have nudity and X-rated films, however." At the same time Silverman pointed to the glut of movies on TV "14 hours a week, as well as Ak hours weekly of features-for-TV. I think that's re-diculous.

It's too much." really think we're going to top Johnny Carson." Those are strong words to use against the acknowledged and longstanding king of the late-nighters, whom Bob Wood, CBS president, has called a "giant." "The public is satiated with the trivia of the talk shows," Silverman expanded in an interview. "They are tired of seeing the same performers float from show to show with the same tired material. Other newcomers did rather poorly, Don Rickles 42d, "Me and the Chimp" 53d, "Emergency!" 54th, Sonny and Cher 55th, but in the last Instance it must be notel that they were opposite the Hope blockbuster. Among the specials, Peggy Fleming's "To Europe with Love" did well, finishing 14th, but because they were on opposite each other, Jack Lemmon's Gershwin special and ABC's Robinson Crusoe Ice Spectacle both faltered, finishing 31st and 49th, respectively. It serves the schedule makers right.

The big fight for late-night viewers between talks shows and movies is less than two weeks away, and the boys are starting to pop off. Fred Silverman, the CBS program boss, who instituted the move from Merv Griffin to films, said, "We'll be No. 1. Yes, I appalling. "Bangladesh!" (Ch.7) Apathetic study in contrast.

"Welcome Home, Johnny Brls tol" (Ch. 5) Protracted, but with a strong climax. "Screaming Woman" (Ch. 7) A slashing performance by Olivia De Havilland. "She Waits" (Ch.

5) A waste of time, except as a "Sixteen '72" (Ch. 4) An impressive debut. "Brotherlove" (Ch. 7) Rough start, sharp thrusts. By Percy Shain Globe Staff James Garner yesterday became the latest movie atar to get his walking papers from TV.

His show, "Nichols," was cancelled by NBC as of season's end, after only a year. His previous vehicle, "Maverick," lasted five years, but it was Garner who dropped that show. News of the cancellation was quickly confirmed by the network. The action was expected, since "Nichols" had fallen JAMES GARNER 'Nichols' is out MORNING GLOBE reviews, in brief: "Surveillance: Who's Watching An oft-told subject, which is still met fc pfe, 1 1 to the bottom of the Nielsen ratings a week ago. The network earlier had tried to save the show by moving it from Thursday to Tuesday, but the public wouldn't buy Garner in his role as reluctant, cowardly sheriff.

Since option time is at hand, many other shows will be getting the blue ticket in the next couple of weeks, some of them involving major names. There is little chance that Tony Curtis will be back in "The Persuaders." Others skating on thin ice are David Janssen in 'O'Hara," Glenn Ford in "Cade's Count Jim Franciscus in "Longstreet," and possibly Jimmy Stewart, though he has picked up some lately. Some old-time favorites will be among the missing, too. Shows like "Bewitched," "Mission: Impossible," "My Three Sons" and "Eddie's Father" have been lagging badly. The big explosion will come around Washington's Birthday, the day the webs try to button up their new schedules.

Garner is in good company in his rejection by the public. Such other authentic movie giants as Anthony Quinn, Henry Fonda, Shirley MacLaine, Rod Taylor and George -Kennedy couldn't survive the mid-season cut in thif "spoiler" season for celebrities. There has been speculation that CBS might start its evening programming at 7:30 next season, instead of 8 p.m. as now, thus setting a jump on the other webs. But the network said, "It's news to us." There is little doubt that NBC and ABC would also shift if CBS did.

The stations have been showing local and syndi-. cated stuff-between 7 and 8 this season, and the result has been a sharp drop in viewers in most markets, including this one. The networks are allowed only three hours a night by FCC edict. The Nielsen fight for the week ending Jan. 23 resulted in an absolute deadlock between NBC and CBS at 20.7, with ABC ttrailing at 18.9.

The big factor in NBC's rise was the "Bob Hope Christmas Show," which usually finishes No. 1 for the year, but this time had to take second position for the week to the phenomenal "All in the Family," which again swept all honors with a mark of 38.4, against Hope's 31.3.
