Bee Rustlers Buzzing Off With Hives In California COIN-WISE TTEIE MO ME DC3 nnnn nnra STOC3VS iV2" 'Ml WASHINGTON A gang of ornery bee rustlers buzzed off with 100 humming hives in California before a posse could head them off at the pass. The bees hard working, invaluable pollinators recently were rustled from San Joaquin Valley beekeepers. If caught, the culprits face, not a necktie party, but $500 fines and jail terms. The kidnaped insects may have been taken north, where the bee shortage is critical. An authorized bee-lift is flying 2 billion honeybees to Oregon and Washington to pollinate the huge fruit crop there.

TAKE TOLL The fruit won't set unless the blossoms are pollinated, and no one has found a better pollinator than a bee. But pesticides have killed off so many Pacific. Northwest bees that fruit growers must pay a premium for the available hives. i Growers have tried spraying pollen from helicopters, but that didn't work. They even have had human workers dust pollen onto blossoms by hand, but that is tedious, slow, and costly.

Bees are the answer. Ironically, farmers once took pollination for granted. They often -charged beekeepers for use of their crops. Now, hives of bees are moved from crop to crop as needed, and farmers pay as much as $10 per hive in rental. About 50 farm crops in the United States require insect pollination, including alfalfa, sweet clover, watermelon, apples and cucumbers.

Pollinating insects are essential for seed development in carrots, radishes, turnips, cabbage, celery, and many other vegetables. The agricultural value of the 4,638,000 bee colonies in the United States aside from honey and wax production is estimated at more than $500 million a year. Honeybees account for more than 80 per cent of all pollina-. tion by insects. Without honeybees, may plants would disappear.

WORKED TO DEATH Fortunately for farmers, the proverbial busy bee is just that. It literally works itself to death only four to eight weeks after the honey gathering begins. Buzzing tirelessly from flower to flower, worker bees gradually wear their delicate wings to a frazzle. A honeybee usually visits just the plants of one species on a foraging trip nature's assurance that the pollen necessary for reproduction is -sprinkled on the proper bios-. sejms.

Honeybees, however, have a lazy streak. They will fly no farther for food than necessary. bust of the President on one side and a proper device on the reverse. Washington's merely had the clasped hands of 4m Indian and a soldier and the words "Peace and Friendship." Authenticated pieces are very rare, with many counterfeits existing. In some cases the only way you could be sure of having an original is to personally unearth it at the site of an Indian burial I have read that some 1914-D one-cent pieces are fakes.

How can I tell a genuine piece from a fake? TJ One trick is to take a Philadelphia Mint 1914 one cent and glue on the (for Denver) mint marie Assuming that the coin does not grade better than "fine," you could submit to a heat test. This reminds me of a story that was told by B. Max Mehl back in 1908: "There were only two half dollars I ever regard as genuine," said Mrs. J. W.

Has-eltine, the veteran Philadelphia dealer. "The first of these I submitted to a heat that gave a cherry-red color to test its genuiness, when the popped out. I didn't dare experiment with the other." The other type of fake may be a 1924-D, with the "2" re-engraved into a "1." Here you have to see if the initials VOB appear on Lincoln's shoulder. If it does, it's a fake, since the initials were not placed on the one-cent pieces until 1918. They were identical, except for, size, and typically Siamese in appearance. The face pictures the ornate Siamese crown between ceremonial Siamese umbrellas. The reverse shows an elephant, the beast of burden in war and peace in Asia. The elephant design calls to mind the fact that King Mong-kut wrote to President Lincoln offering elephants to help the Union cause. One subject you haven't written about is "Indian Peace Medals." WG I am sure you are wrong.

There must be hundreds of subjects I have not covered. But I will write enough now to at least give the average reader a Little understanding of the subject, and I promise more information in the future. These medals were struck to present' to American Indian Chiefs who entered into treaties or alliances with the "foreigners" who came from Europe to "steal" their land. British generals presented them on behalf of the reigning king. Ffrench generals did likewise.

Even Napoleon, when he controlled the so-called Louisiana Territory, had such medals struck. They showed his portrait as First Consul. The clash of two strong wills across the board can overthrow weeks and months of solitary study, and the variations we find in books on the openings owe far more to master practice than to the labor of analysts and annotators. Both are however, and in what follows, we shall illustrate the development of one such variation.

(AP) Philip Vinciguerra mined coal for 25 years in West Virginia to take care of his family, but once he got around to going to college, he progressed with a speed that would put Horatio Alger heroes to shame. He entered Pikeville College when he was 46 with a baseball scholarship. There he was a member of the student council for four years (president as a senior), manager of the basketball team and a member of the Circle K. Rifile Club.

His grades came out plus. Upon graduating, he pecame Pikeville admissions counse-' lor, then director of admissions, associate dean of students and finally dean of students, his present position.
