Area Residents Back Bills to Block MBT A Dorchester Plans blocks from the State House and on the fringe of Government Center. mind While the hearing was in progress top brass "of the M.B.TA were officially opening the newly renovated Bowdoin Station, two By ROBERT B. CAKR A parade cf legislators and residents of the Cedar Grove area in Dorchester today-spoke out in strong support cf a measure at a State House hearing that would prevent the MBTA from closing down the Cedar Grove station. The MBTA last week announced plans to eliminate Cedar Grove as one of the four stations to go when the present Ashmont-Mattapan trolley line is converted to a rapid transit operation. The new operation would be an extension of the present Cambridge-to-Dorchester line which now terminates at Ashmont Station.

More than 100 residents cf the Mattapan-Milton area, most of them housewives, also attended the meeting to speak out against the plans to revamp the Mattapan line and to relocate in the Mattapan Square area the train storage and repair yards now at Harvard Square in Cambridge. The Cambridge yards are located on the site of the planned Kennedy Library building complex. SELECTMAN OBJECTS The M.B.TA! pushed through its advisory board last Thursday the relocation plan so as to be able to vacate the Cambridge site in time for the anticipated construction start for the library in January, 1970. Objecting to the relocation plan both last Thursday and again at today's hearing was the Milton selectmen's chairman, Francis Brooks. Brooks charged that the Mattapan relocation plan was announced only three weeks ago by the M.B.T.A.

residential community which resulted last night in the formation of the Mattapan-Milton Taxpayers Assn. to fight the M.B.T.A, plan. Mrs. Ann E. Walsh of Milton has been elected president of the neworganization.

The bill which would spe-cifcally prevent the M.B.TA. from going through with its plans to close the Cedar Grove Station was filed jointly by Boston Reps. Joseph Walsh and Paul Murphy, both Democrats. TO WALK A MILE They told the Committee on transportation, of which Walsh is a member, that such a move by the M.B.T.A. would force residents of the area to walk about a mile to get a train.

The bill would specifically require approval by the mayor of Boston before closing any M.B.T.A, stations in the city. However, it was indicated by Samuel V. Merrick, special counsel to Mayor in a statement read to the hearing, that White was in favor of shutting the station. The mayor's statement, however, said he was anxious to hear the views of the people before making up his and termed the entire proposal "ill timed and ill considered." Three of the four stations to be eliminated under the new plan are in Milton and the fourth is at Cedar Grove in Dorchester. Among the parade of witnesses speaking against closing the Cedar Grove Station was Samuel Sawtelle of Dorchester, president of the Cedar Grove which was influential in forcing the M.B.T.A.

to abandon its original plans to relocate the Cambridge yards in its Cod-man yards area in the Cedar Grove-Ashmont section of Dorchester. RESIDENTS REACT So heated were the objections -of residents of the area at demonstrations and public hearings against the plan that the legislature passed a bill which forced the M.B.T.A. to look elsewhere. This has resulted in M.B.T.A. finally deciding- to enlarge the M.B.T.A.

Innocent civilians, too often women and children, and our youths are dying on the battlefields in ever increasing numbers, sacrificed to a military goal which is unrealistic and futile. "Victory" purchased only by total destruction of that small nation is to us ethically untenable. America has been spared the horrors of a destructive war fought on our own soil.
