That's the first thing that hits you when he walks into the room looking tanned and healthy, wearing a spiffy white suit and navy shirt.

He's heavier than the slim guy on the old "Dick Van Dyke Show" and his hair is streaked with white. He said he's spent the last two years in San Dieeo where he fell in love with a sailboat. Van Dyke said he's had several offers to do dramatic roles since he starred in "The Morning After" two years ago. By nature, however, he always sees the humor in serious situations and he wouldn't want dramatic roles as a steady diet. Right now he's fulfilling a longtime desire to host a variety show and he's out to break the network "system." "You have to submit a proposed list of guests to the network and they compare it with their demographics and their PDQ," Van Dyke said.

"They send it back with some of the names crossed off and you arrive at a compromise. They don't want guests who won't give a rating point, so it becomes a closed system. You get the same people on variety shows all the time. I'm going to make a big effort to break that. I don't think anyone has put up a fight about it and I'm going to fight." Van Dyke said he'd like to get some talented Broadway stars on the show and he's been visiting improvise tional companies around the country to find new talent.

"I think I can get by with it by having one guest, a John Denver, and then I can bring in some unknowns," Van Dyke said. "What I'd like to do is evolve a kind of stock company but the network doesn't give you time for that." Dyke said he will follow his own instincts, planning the type of show he would watch with his own family. Although he likes the new trends in comedy being explored on such shows as NBC's "Saturday Night Live," Van Dyke said audiences don't expect that kind of humor from him. "I like why they're doing, being free wheeling," he said. "More than what they've done in content, I like what they're doing conceptually.

They've gotten away from that variety show look. It looks like a party the way they've brought the audience into that show." Van Dyke said the now. infamous ski-shooting piece on Claudine Longet, in which skiers were shot as they went down the slopes, was the most tasteless thing he had ever seen on television; but he doesn't generally find "Saturday Night Live" offensive. "I've laughed at things on that show I wouldn't do myself," Van Dyke said. "My audience doesn't expect that of me.

I'm a family entertainer and that's what people expect." Van Dyke said he had just seen the first scripts from his writers who appear to be about 15 years old to him. "I told them to write what is funny and we'd go from there. A lot of the stuff is pretty wild," Van Dyke said. "I got excited because I can see I'm going to be stretched and that's why I'm in the business." NBC has given Van Dyke development money to do a follow-up to "The Morning After," which showed the problem of alcoholism, and he hopes to have that ready by spring. It will probably not be a sequel but a treatment story, he said.

Van Dyke said he had been in treatment for alcoholism for about a year when producer David Wolper sent him the script for "The Morning After." "I fell in love with the script because I knew it was authentic from my personal experience," Van Dyke said. "The first thing I said to them was, 'How did you know I was an 'You're a (they said)." Van Dyke said Wolper had sent him the script because he wanted an average-looking man to play the role, to show that alcoholism can be a problem for average people. At that point, Van Dyke said he felt it was important that he make a public announcement that he was an alcoholic and he called columnist Marilyn Beck. He said he's necer regretted that decision and the reaction has been totally positive. He still gets letters from recovered alcoholics who date the turning point in their lives from the time they saw "The Morning After." Van Dyke said most people feel he Isn't the type to become an alcoholic.
