EVENING The Silent Majority can be heard ED MATTAR is one tallcmaster who will not rudely hang-up if he disagree! with you. Call him and see. JFt By Percy Shain Globe Staff Merv Griffin used to get housewives sputtering around here with his late-afternoon didoes. But nothing he ever did in his Group run was quite as tawdry as the jeering imitation of the Tiny Tim-Miss Vicki wedding he permitted to occupy his stage last night. Steve Allen must share the blame, for he wrote the vulgar skit and acted in it with his wife, Jayne Meadows, in what he called "The Marriage of Big Steve and Miss Jaynie." Desperation often makes people do strange things, and that is the only excuse I can find for this offense to good taste, perpetrated in a cheap attempt to duplicate the ratings that the original ceremony got on the "Johnny Carson Show." There was no humor in this reproduction of last week's affair with Steve affecting a luxuriant hairdo, a hooked nose, and a high-pitched giggle, throwing in double en-tendres and innuendoes at every chance, while Jayne played a retarded girl of 14 who kept pumping her daddy in the stomach every few seconds.

Dom DeLuise, who was scheduled to play the judge, apparently wanted no part of these asinine doings, so Jack Carter never noted for his propriety moved over to play the justice while old Arthur Treacher filled in as the father. Jack did utter one truth in his mock ritual: "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here to increase our ratings." Well, maybe Tiny Tim asked for it in the rank commercialism that surrounded his nuptials. NBC has been no better than the rival network in allowing repeated snickering slurs on its airways, from such as Bob Hope and Johnny Carson himself, whose promise of "no ridicule" turned out to be a sham. The more I see of this whole business, the more I think they all should be ashamed of themselves. WHIL WO Radio ffi "Hp I 7TTlJj7 Thanks to a whopping win for "Hans Brinker," the musical special, as the top-rated show of the week, NBC gained its largest margin yet in the Nielsen ratings for the week ending Dec.

14 a score of 20.3 as against 17.7 for CBS and 16.9 for ABC. The victory enabled the network to claim a sweep for the 13-week Fall season, in which it led CBS by 19.9 to 19.1. NBC also led at this stage a year ago, but was nosed out in the final week of the season after a year-long neck-and -neck duel. Following "Brinker" in the top 10 were mostly old favorites, "Gunsmoke," "Dean Martin," "Bonanza," "Music Hall," "Laugh-In," "Marcus Welby, M.D.," "Ironside," "Lucy" and "Movie of the Week." The high "Music Hall" rating was a good omen for Johnny Cash, who was its host that week and shortly begins a weekly variety show on ABC. The movie was Ray Milland's "Daughter of the Mind." There was good news, too, for CBS which reported that an overnight National Arbitron rating gave the "Glen Campbell Show" a 25.8 rating and a 42 percent share of audience in its Sunday night debut Dec.

21. That was considerably higher than the figure usually garnered by Leslie Uggams, the predecessor show, and enabled it to trounce "Bonanza," which had a 21.1 rating and 34 percent share. Tom Bonnar 2 Misteroaer't Neighborhood 3:15 3:30 10:00 Mothers were rejoicing today that "Captain Kangaroo" will be back in its 60-minute entirety on the Ch. 5 slate starting Jan. 5. The experiment of giving half the time to "Bozo" will have lasted just 17 weeks. The station decided the old way was better.

Accordingly, "Bozo" will go back to its old 7:30 a.m. slot; the Joseph Benti news show will be cut to a half-hour, starting at and "Kangaroo" maestro Bob Keeshan will again hold forth for the full hour from 8 to 9, which has been his on the CBS network for many years. The change was a signal victory for Action for Children's Television (ACT), the mothers' group that has been putting pressure on the station for many weeks for the full "Kangaroo" through the medium of letters, phone calls, meetings with management and one picketing march. Ch. 5 had promised, in a letter to protesters, that it would "reevaluate the situation" after 13 weeks.
