I know that my value as an intelligence officer is finished due to all this exposure but I do hope they will now find some other job for me on the police department," he said. He felt however that they had a certain amount of faith in him because they have left him on the payroll. "I don't know what I investigated because Daddieco made his first statement to police officers in early September, 1969 and indictments quickly followed in the same month of September. Stuart ended the interview by calling for the election of a new district attorney.

Asked about his future, Stuart said that he believed that many of the police officers from the ment's chief witness, Daddieco, was the man who killed Grasso. Grasso's body was found stuffed in an automobile trunk six days after Bennett's body was found in a Mattapan gutter. Stuart also testified that he had arrested Daddieco in 1962 and the convict-turned-informer named him out of a grudge. In an interview after the trial, Stuart said that he was handicapped during the trial because he did not want to make certain police reports public.

He said it might put certain people in danger and also he did not want to be in the position of publicly naming police informants. Robert Daddieco, who still faces charges after shooting a police officer in a Somerville holdup, was the government's key witness. Daddieco in the trial told a story of six men plotting the death of Bennett. He named the six men as Stephen Flemrni and Francis Salemme, both now fugitives; Peter Poulos and Richard Gras-so, both now dead, and Daddieco and Shields, the defendant.
