tv a IS The Boston Globe Tuesday, February 17, 1970 THEATER ARTS Fat actresses don't have to play funny roles 1 1 there although she has gone, as a married woman, to various parts of the world. For two years she and her husband lived in Morocco. Recently, as a divorcee, she has been singing in Athens. Because there are some fairly strict laws against American singers working in Greece, the actress had to cooperate with the cafe owners in an amusing, and at the same time, effective stratagem. and real names are used in the picture.

"I think Martha Beck is a wonderfully interesting woman," said Miss Stoler. "And this is a romance, in a strange way, even if it resulted in the deaths of three women and a child. Martha was madly in love with Ray Fernandez. And she was jealous of even the women she helped him kill." Shirley is a native of Brooklyn and still lives lain skin, the slim, almost dainty ankles give her an air of distinguished charm. When I asked her how long she has been overweight, she replied with a twinkling smile, "I prefer you use the word voluptuous." She began to turn into a fat gal when she was 17 and ate everything in sight, especially butter.

She nw goes on occasional diets, but her agents advise, "Don't lose a pound." It seems she is the only actress of her size who is a dramatic actress of experience and who can make a graceful transposition from Julian Beck's Living Theater in New York to the national company of "The Music Man" with Forrest Tucker. But since "The Honeymoon Killers" Miss Stoler has decided she wants to concentrate on the films. You can't blame her. "The Honeymoon Killers," made, as she says, "at the unheard of small cost of slightly under $200,000 but with a great deal of intelligence and hard work" is mopping up at the boxoffi-ces in every city it has been shown in. "It was by accident that I got the role of Martha Beck," says Miss Stoler.

"I had just returned from Europe where I had been singing in cafes and had no job in prospect. My friend, Marilyn Chris, who had also been in the Living Theater, was auditioned for the role. She was told she was not the type. And then she did what few actresses I have ever known would have done. She told them she knew exactly the kind of actress they were looking for an arranged a meeting for me with By Marjory Adams Globe Staff A fat actress doesn't necessarily have to be funny.

She can be a killer. She can also play classic roles in Greek drama like Clytem-nestra in Orestes or the tragic Medea. And she can look forward in her dreams to playing Lady Constance in Shakespeare's "King Jon." It is as a murderess that Shirley Stoler came to Boston last week. She is the wicked but love-struck Martha Beck in "Honeymoon Killers" at the Music Hall. She walked into the Sheraton Plaza suite looking considerably less than 200 pounds which is her weight according to film statistics.

Actually, she says it is more. But her smartly cut black dress which isn't mini, her long chestnut hair, her porce 7 director-writer Tueonard Kastle and producer Warren SteibeL It was that easy." So today Shirley is getting plaudits for playing a woman who willingly helps her loer kill other women for money but who would prefer to see him dead than in his victim's arms. In real life she appears aa lot too gentle for such toughness. Much of the picture was made in Pittsfield because Steibel has a home in New Febanon and considers the community a perfect place for cinematography. There's the lake, for instance, where she ties to drown herself during one of her more depressed moments.

"We started the filming in August when the lake was warn and lovely we ended in October for an extra scene when it was freezing," shuddered Miss Stoler. Her hardest scene, however, occurred when she had to slap six-year-old Mary Breen and then kill her. "I was terrified before the scene, but she was as cool and unruffled as a ret star." "Honeymoon Killers" was taken, in some parts verbatim, from the newspaper accounts of a sensational case of 1950-51. They called them "The Lonely Heart Killers" then SHIRLEY Assaf Dayan, actor or STOLER the Front?" which Jerry Lewis is making. Q.

Will James Earl Jones and Jane Alexander repeat their Tony Award performances on the stage when "The Great White Hope" is made into a film? I hope so. Hamilton B. Traynor A. Yes and the picture is already completed by Director Martin Ritt. Lawrence Turman produced it.

Q. Can you name some of the films in which Brian Keith has appeared before he played in the current THEATERS DELIGHT!" mniTu rpicT AUDIBLE To the Editor: Does there appear to be any end in sight as to what the theaters are charging to see films in 1970? I have been asked up to $3 for one seat at a downtown theater and that is far more than I can afford to pay for two hours of relaxation. Furthermore, I am forced to look for near a quarter of an hour at trailers advertising pictures at other theaters or due at the one I am in. I am the captive audience. When I am at home watching TV I can turn off the set.

I have to close my eyes to avoid advertising at the theater. And for this I pay Will this continue with film going becoming a luxury only a few can afford? Is it all due to the higher cost of living or is it some Globe critic "Marry Me! Marry Me!" at the Circle Theater, Cleveland Circle, is a joy to welcome in Boston during the harsh Winter months. Made by Claude Berri, who wrote and directed the 1968 prize winning import, "The Two Of Us," the film relates the adventures of a Jewish youth who is troubled by too many girl friends, not enough money, an unanticipated father Q. AUDIENCE what caused by mismanagement among the exhibitors? Certainly comparatively inexpensive pictures (and we don't get them cheaper at the boxoffice) can attract enormous audiences, so it does not seem necessary for the producers to make films which cost $12,000,000 to $20,000,000.

Boston NOTE: The theaters say taxes arc waqes are way up, the cost of money is almost prohibitive. Even insurance brings up the cost of movie tickets. Michael Frankovich, veteran producer, whose last film is "Marooned," said recently that seven $2 admissions are needed to get a $1 return on a film. Another producer predicts $5 admissions within the for-seeable future. Life gets toucher every year.

M.F.A. recommends hood, and an extravagant, spoiled fiance. The story is warm, sympathetic and romantic in the ironic way that young lovers now conduct their affairs. Above all, it is hilariously fimy and pokes fun at both young people and their parents. One over-plump belle explains her popularity by saying that the boys take thin girls to the parties but go home with the fat girls.
