iioston Evening Uiubo Inday, noveuiDu od 50 MGUT WATCH TELEVISION RADIO Veteran, Novice Shows Unseated In Annual Musical Chairs Game Lowell's WXPO-TV Makes Its Debut A new channel lighted up on the TV' trum for the first time last night. It was Station WXPO-TV, Lowell (Ch. 50); beginning operations with what it called preview programming. The outlet introduced several of its daily-features, including the "Mike Douglas Show" at 7, the "Dennis Wholey Show" at 8:30, News Central at and the "Steve Allen Show" from 10:30 to sign-off at midnight. New stanzas of the same shows will be on tonight, starting at 7.

Week-end programming will start at 6, "Secret Agent," "John Gary Show," "Parade of the Bands," "Here Come the Stars" and a movie comprising Saturday's card; with "Secret Agent," "David Susskind Show," "Here Come the Stars," "Week-End in Hollywood," and a movie scheduled Sunday. Monday the station goes to full programming, beginning at noon. Official opening ceremonies have been held back for two weeks. 11:30 (4) MOVIE. "Soldier in the Rain," Jackie Gleason, Steve McQueen, Tuesday Weld, service comedy. 11:39 (56) I Which leaves us with overlapping Monday and Tuesday films and no pictures at all Wednesday. That's an unbalanced situation that someone will soon rectify, I'm sure. Nature abhors a vacuum.

The four new programs were all mentioned as probabilities in yesterday's story. They include the "Johnny Cash Show," a summertime hit, and "The Engelbert Humperdinck Show," two song stanzas, which will have adjoining hour-long slots Wednesdays, 8 to 10. That is too much saturation programming of a single type. The other two are the "Pat Paulsen Show," a half hour of sketch comedy with guest stars, Thursdays at and "Nanny and the Professor," a story about a governess and a widower with three kids, which will start off the-Wednesday slate. The latter situation comedy, produced in Britain, will star Juliet Mills of the celebrated acting family and Richard Long, so well-liked in "The Big Valley." Two nights are untouched, Sundays and Tuesdays, where the net- work has done generally well, even though Sunday's "Land of the Giants" is one of those bottom 15.

STEINCROHN Evening The style show was a gee whizzer, and the songs of the Jerome Kern-Otto Harbach score wore well, especially "Smoke Gets; In Your Eyes," "I Won't Dance" and Yesterdays." But the complete unac-ceptability of the script in this medium and this day showed in the bewildered way most of the lines were read. Even the actors had a-hard time "keeping straight faces. COMMENT: Keeping your weight within normal limits and taking a sensible diet are important factors.

But doing so is no guarantee against getting diabetes. What is important, with your family history, is to discover it early if it develops so you can treat it effectively. Therefore, I believe you should have urine- checkups every few months and blood sugar determinations at least once or twice yearly. i By PERCY SHAIN Globe Stiff Predictions contained in a "dope story" here yesterday on the impending shakeup at ABC were pretty well borne out when the axe finally fell last night, leaving five shows out in the cold and shuffling eight others to new spots in the hope they will find a new life in their altered circumstances. The trailers In the most recent Nielsen ratings in which ABC held all 15 bottom places were pretty well cleaned with the cancellation of two veteran shows, "Hollywood Palace" a nd "Dating Game," and three newcomers, "Music Scene," "New People" and "Mr.

Deeds Goes to Town." WENT TOGETHER "Scene" "and "People" had to go together since, because of their odd 45-minute lengths, they were inseparably entwined and neither ever got off the ground. The news of "Deeds" departure broke a day early. "Other trailers were kept on mainly because there just weren't enough new vehicles in development to take their places. And so they were checker-boarded all over the place where it is hoped they may find added support "The Survivors" and "Love, American Style," which were rating duds back to back Mondays, found new homes as 10 p.m. night closers on Thursdays and Fridays, respectively.

"It 1 Takes a Thief" couldn't make it as a late-night show, even with the added cast insurance of Fred Astaire, so now it starts off the new Monday setup at 7:30 (where it looks very much like a sacrificial lamb to "Laugh-In" and "Gunsmoke," consistent leaders). "Flying Nun" hops from Wednesday to Friday, and Mrs. Muir" from Thursday to Friday, "Let's Make a Deal" from F.r i day to Saturday, "Jimmy, Durante' and the Lennon Sisters" also from Friday to Saturday. Their followers will have to do considerable searching about to keep track of them. BIGGEST SHIFT But the biggest shift of all has not yet been mentioned.

ABC took dead aim on the NBC Tuesday movie by scheduling an 8:30 start for its "Movie of the Week." So now it is trying again by transporting its Wednesday movie showcase to Monday and scheduling its longer pictures there so that tLey can start at 8:30 too. 4:00 2-44 Antiaues News, weather (c) 4 Star Trek (c) 9-ABC News (e) 1 1 EvansNovalt Report 38 Dobi Gillis 56 Patty Duka 6:30 2-44 Sanior Citizens Voice (e) 4- 10 Huntley-Brinkley Report (e) 5- 12 Walter Cronkite, newt (e) 7 Tha Game Gama e) 9 News, weather 1 1 Auto Mechanic 38 Man From U.N.C.LE. COMMENT: I wish we! knew how to determine which cats transmit the disease and which do not. But we have no way of knowing. And there is no efficient vaccine which will take care, of the problem, either. Fortunately, most cats do not transmit the disease and it is hot contagious. A person is as likely to get it rom a well-kept house cat as from some wandering alley cat.

It all depends upon which carries the virus. In direct answer to your question, you do not have to get rid of your cat. Just try to impress on your youngsters not to play too rough with their pet. There's less chance of getting scratched. In some cases of cat scratch disease, there's not even a history of having been scratched.

Perhaps the virus can be picked up through handling contaminated objects. After contact or exposure to the scratch, it takes three to seven days for the disease to incubate. Anywhere from a week to a month later, glands may become swollen. And abscessed. They need to be drained in about one-third of the cases.

Please help! Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you. Miss R. COMMENT: I wish I could make it grow faster or in some patients grow at all. I'm helpless to help!
